About The Position

AHRC New York City is seeking a full-time Employment Skills Instructor to support young adults with disabilities as they build workplace readiness and develop vocational skills through hands-on internship rotations. Under the direction of the Program Director/ Program Coordinator, the Skills Instructor makes an active and organized effort to maximize each participant’s development and well-being by implementing individualized program plans, integrating the services received, and recording ongoing progress. The program assesses, trains and places individuals with Intellectual and Development Disabilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelors in field of Education, Social Work, Psychology, Rehabilitation Counseling or related human services, plus 2 years teaching experience or permanent certification from NYS Department of Education/NYC Board of Education or combination of 8 years related education and experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of methods, principles and techniques of teaching developmentally disabled and non-disabled adults needed.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other professional staff and participants’ families.
  • Ability to conduct evaluations and make recommendations.
  • Ability to successfully complete DOE/PIC training in use of its mandatory curriculum.

Responsibilities

  • Implement assessment and work readiness training curriculum coupled with soft skills curriculum.
  • Determines program eligibility and intakes individuals into the program
  • Coordinates eligibility for local and state agencies to provide a seamless system of support
  • Helps find and refer to other needed services i.e. individual counseling, case management
  • Maintains regular contact with funding sources and writes and sends all reports
  • Maintains regular contact with all partners
  • Responsible for developing and conducting structured dialogue with trainees
  • Implements individualized person-centered teaching plans.
  • Provides instruction in performance of various tasks that improve object manipulation, cognitive skills, socialization skills, personal hygiene skills, independent living skills, and employment skills while addressing deficits in self-direction.
  • Prepares all lesson plans
  • Conducts any work readiness workshops at a variety of different sites
  • Engages and facilitates case conferences with families, ACCES counselors, and any other services providers in order to provide an appropriate summary of participants’ progress.
  • Maintains appropriate attendance and other required records.
  • Direct responsibility for the assessment and training of the individuals in order to assist in job matching activities
  • Provides job coaching supports as needed
  • Assists in preparing and finding new employment for individuals seeking career advancement and/or different work opportunities
  • Ensures use of technology is teaching individuals work-readiness and occupational skills
  • Transports participants to medical appointments, when necessary.
  • Acts as Client Coordinator, if so assigned by Program Director.
  • Participates in regular and special staff conferences, as well as regular ongoing in-service training session (attending all mandatory in-service sessions).
  • Assists in training/placement activities as assigned.
