About The Position

Under the direction and/or support of the Respiratory Therapy Professional Practice Leader, Site Leader, Research, Education & Practice Coordinator, or supervising Respiratory Therapist, the Employed Student Respiratory Therapist provides direct respiratory therapy care to patients commensurate with their level of education and training. They operate in accordance with the program philosophy, principles, and policies, including Indigenous Cultural Safety, cultural humility and anti-racism principles, competency guidelines, and Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT) Standards for Respiratory practices.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of Level 1 clinical placement from an accredited Respiratory Therapy Program.
  • Continued enrollment in a recognized education program.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support or equivalent.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Organization of workload and prioritization.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective interaction with internal and external contacts.

Responsibilities

  • Assess, record, and report patient health status through data collection, observation, physical assessments, and collaboration with the Respiratory Therapy team, multi-disciplinary team, patients, and families.
  • Collaborate in the development and modification of patient care plans, including health-promoting relationships, goal setting, care action prioritization, and discharge planning.
  • Provide Respiratory Therapy care under supervision, including assisting with procedures, therapies, interventions, oxygen therapy, administering medications, airway management, mechanical ventilation, patient education, crisis management, and supply/equipment maintenance.
  • Evaluate patient response to interventions, modify care as needed, and participate in multidisciplinary team evaluations and discharge readiness assessments.
  • Participate in quality improvement plans/activities, data collation, and adherence to health and safety requirements.
  • Immediately report unsafe situations to supervisors or appropriate personnel.
