About The Position

VEG is hiring a per diem Emergency Veterinarian in Horizon West, Florida. The veterinarian provides emergency care to pets, including exotic animals, in a customer-centered, open-concept hospital environment. The role includes answering medical questions, assessing and diagnosing patients, discussing treatment options and estimates with customers, performing emergency procedures, and educating customers on aftercare and prevention. The veterinarian serves as a leader on the hospital floor and works with a team supported by mentorship, continuous learning, and ER-focused continuing education.

Requirements

• DVM or equivalent degree.
• Passion for emergency medicine, including emergency soft-tissue surgery and endoscopy.
• Ability to work effectively in team-oriented environments.
• Ability to stand for prolonged periods, kneel, and work on the floor.
• Ability to lift up to 25 kg independently and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
• Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
• Availability to work nights, weekends, and holidays on a rotating or as-needed basis according to hospital needs.
• Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment with people from varied backgrounds and personality types.

Responsibilities

• Answer medical questions over the phone.
• See patients promptly through VEG Triage and VEG Spikes, helping ensure people see a doctor right away and families can stay with their pets.
• Gather patient signalment, presenting complaint, vital signs, and physical examination findings.
• Conduct physical examinations and other investigations, including ultrasounds, X-rays, bloodwork, and biopsies.
• Diagnose each pet’s condition and create diagnostic and therapeutic plans.
• Communicate diagnoses and treatment options directly to customers.
• Prepare estimates and present them to customers.
• Create and review medical records for accuracy.
• Explain the value of tests and treatments and address customer concerns.
• Perform minor and major emergency surgeries.
• Perform endoscopic procedures.
• Educate customers about aftercare and preventive measures where appropriate.
