About The Position

The City of Farmington is seeking an Emergency Vehicle Technician/Mechanic for its General Service/Vehicle Maintenance Department. This regular, full-time position involves the repair and maintenance of emergency fire protection and public safety vehicles and equipment, as well as other City-owned equipment. The role requires excellent customer service skills, the ability to work independently, and a commitment to maintaining vehicles within budget and ensuring efficient use of resources. The technician will perform various diagnostic and repair tasks on complex vehicle systems, manage preventive maintenance schedules, coordinate with vendors, and handle recalls and upgrades. This position is critical for ensuring the operational readiness of the city's emergency fleet.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
Some specialized training in mechanics, maintenance management, or a closely related field.
Eight years of related experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record for the past three years.
Commercial driver's license must be obtained prior to entry into employment, or an E endorsement on your driver's license at the time of hire.
Must be a certified mechanic by Automotive Service Excellence (A.S.E.) in T4 (Truck Brakes), T5 (Truck Suspension and Steering), T8 (PMI), T3 (Truck Drive Train), T6 (Truck Electrical Systems), T2 (Truck Diesel Engines), or able to obtain these certifications within 9 months of employment.
Must be EVT certified in F1 and F2, Level 1, or able to attempt the required certifications within 9 months of employment.
Extensive knowledge of automotive mechanics.
Thorough knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, fire pumps and valves, generators, welding, and grades or quality of materials and equipment.
Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities.
Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.
Ability to maintain effective preventive maintenance programs, policies, and procedures.
Ability to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays.
Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion.
Ability to follow verbal and/or written instructions.
Ability to work under stress and handle stressful situations.
Ability to meet deadlines.
Ability to operate tools and equipment listed.
Must be able to work with little supervision and be very self-motivated.
Must have a telephone at residence and be willing to be on 24-hour call.
Must be able to be at the Municipal Operations Center within thirty minutes after receiving a call or page.
Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.
Subject to the City of Farmington's Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace Program (pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing).
A pre-employment physical and drug test will be required.
Extensive background checks required.

Responsibilities

Repair and maintenance of emergency fire protection and public safety vehicles and equipment.
Work on all other City of Farmington owned equipment as assigned.
Ensure areas of responsibility are performed within budget and assure effective and efficient use of personnel, material, facilities, and time.
Maintain harmony among workers and deal with other departments and the public.
Determine, calculate, and secure appropriate materials and supplies for specific projects.
Carry out and evaluate preventive maintenance schedules for all fire emergency units and related equipment.
Inspect, adjust, and replace necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work.
Conduct repairs on brake, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies, and related systems on all types of equipment.
Coordinate with outsourced maintenance done by vendors.
Research and schedule unit recalls and upgrades from manufacturers.
Change and repair tires.
Evaluate the status of mechanical equipment and vehicles, and perform or schedule needed repairs.
Conduct various analyses and inspections of vehicles and mechanical systems to determine the most cost-effective means of maintenance, repair, or replacement using diagnostic instruments and various tools.
Requisition equipment, parts, and supplies used for vehicle and mechanical system maintenance.
Perform repairs and/or maintenance on fire units and equipment at the stations as needed.
Maintain fire pumps, foam systems, PTOs, generators, lighting, and specialty equipment on various types of vehicles and trailers.
Maintain records, prepare reports, and other specialized maintenance records of equipment and mechanical equipment.
Provide emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate, including safely operating and utilizing a mechanic service truck.
Serve on various employee committees, as required and assigned.
