The Patient Care Technician works under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to provide direct patient care for individuals of all ages. This role supports the healthcare team by assisting with activities of daily living, monitoring patient conditions, performing clinical support tasks, and helping create a safe, comfortable, and healing environment for patients and their families. The ED EST is responsible for providing and supporting patient care and an exceptional patient experience in the ED. The ED EST is also responsible for supporting efficient throughput of both discharged and admitted ED patients.

Requirements

  • High school graduate/GED or equivalent
  • BLS required

Nice To Haves

  • EMT/EMT-P preferred
  • EKG certification preferred
  • Phlebotomy certification preferred
  • Previous customer/patient relations experience preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a Patient Care Technician/CNA preferred

Responsibilities

  • Stocks and organizes ED supplies and equipment including dietary supplies
  • Transports patients into and out of the ED including assisting patients from private vehicles, moving patients via wheelchair, stretcher, or hospital bed
  • Measures and documents vital signs accurately and timely
  • Present in the ED waiting area providing support and information to patients and families awaiting care or test results
  • Keeps Nurse First or Charge Nurse aware of patient or family changes or increased anxieties. Alerts RN to any patients expressing the desire or demonstrating behaviors concerning for leaving without being seen.
  • May perform phlebotomy as ordered by the provider or per Nursing Protocol orders
  • Performs circulating role during trauma activations
  • Performs POCT (and daily QI) and documents results; follows procedure for reporting critical results
  • Performs EKGs as ordered by the provider or per Nursing protocol orders
  • Responds to call bells
  • Assists patients as needed (e.g., ambulation, bed pans, comfort measures)
  • Performs hourly rounding in conjunction with the ED RN; documents same in the EHR
  • Performs 1:1 suicide watch as requested
  • Performs the sitter role as requested
  • Identifies needed repairs to equipment or department and submits work orders for same
  • Maintains pre-hospital equipment in an organized clean manner and communicates with pre-hospital providers
  • Participates in ED staff meetings and ED Shared Governance
  • Performs clerical tasks and duties as assigned.
  • Other duties to support departmental operations as assigned.
