About The Position

The Emergency Department Technician (EDT) functions as a technician, supply aide, and unit clerk to support in the day-to-day operations of the Emergency Department (ED). The EDT works under the direct supervision of a registered nurse. EDT will be asked to perform various technical procedures, be responsible for stocking the ED with required supplies, equipment, and instrumentation to ensure safe, effective patient care. Duties can also include, efficiently use the computer and telephone, and maintain an orderly and efficient nurses station. The EDT will interface with all guests, visitors, families, and patients arriving at, or calling the ED. The incumbent provides directions and information as well as making appropriate referrals. The position of ED technician is identified as "department safety-sensitive". Department safety-sensitive positions mean employment positions which may in the normal course of business: Require the employee to operate the company vehicles or heavy equipment, or Involves duties, which, if performed with inattentiveness, errors in judgment, or diminished coordination, dexterity, or composure, may result in mistakes that could present a real and/or imminent threat to the personal health and safety of the employee, co-worker, and/or the public. As an ED technician, you are delegated the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary for carrying out your assigned duties.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Successful completion of Basic or Advanced EMT course
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a State of Nevada EMT or Advanced EMT certification or Nationally Registered AEMT through the National Registry of EMTs.
  • Current BLS certification by American Heart Association standards required
  • Obtain and maintain ACLS certification within 6 months
  • Six months of EMT or Advanced EMT experience, or one year of experience as an emergency room technician required.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak the English language in an understandable manner.
  • Ability and willingness to work harmoniously with professional and non-professional personnel.
  • Able to communicate clearly and tactfully with patients, their families, and co-workers.
  • Must be a role model of a professional nurse.

Responsibilities

  • Provides technical skills and communicates effectively with supervisors, other ED staff, physicians, and ancillary staff.
  • Ensures that equipment is working properly before ED procedures, cares for equipment after procedure, and is responsible for reporting equipment that is not working properly or is broken.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, motor/sensor, psychosocial, and safety appropriate to the neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient population served and meet standards of quality as measured by the unit/department age specific competency standards.
  • Provides technical skills and competencies in the Emergency Department.
  • Demonstrates competency in area of employment as evidenced by competency assessment/skills checklist.
  • Demonstrates ability to complete or assist with all procedures as required.
  • Able to provide and maintain the proper supplies, equipment, and instrumentation that are needed for specific procedures and patients needs in the ED.
  • Adheres to ENA standards and ED policies and procedures.
  • Able to correctly setup for ED procedures.
  • Correctly cares for equipment and instruments.
  • Assists in room turnover to provide optimum customer service.
  • Performs EKGs Orthopedic skills, places temporary splinting material, sager splints, shoulder immobilizers, finger splints, wrist immobilizers, ace wraps, knee immobilizers, pelvic binders, ankle air splints, slings, soft and hard c-collars.
  • Setup and breakdown of sterile equipment and trays, maintains sterile field.
  • Postmortem care including placing the deceased into a body bag, preserving the eyes and tissue for donation, transporting to the morgue, calling the coroner and the tissue bank.
  • Wound care, irrigation, cleaning, and dressing of wounds.
  • Document during Code Blue.
  • Transport patients/telemetry patients throughout the hospital via gurney, wheelchair, or hospital bed.
  • Performs phlebotomy
  • Insertion of peripheral IV access
  • Properly obtains and labels specimens.
  • Hand carries specimens such as, products of conception and spinal fluid to the laboratory.
  • Seeks guidance when appropriate.
  • Appropriate referral utilizing chain of command.
  • Resolves problems that may compromise patient care.
  • Communicates appropriate information to supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Takes an active role in the orientation, socialization involvement and adjustment of new employees.
  • Demonstrates the ability to identify and maintain appropriate priorities.
  • Facilitates communication effectively with personnel from all departments for the purpose of scheduling diagnostic tests, treatments, and procedures, ordering diets and requisitioning supplies.
  • Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge and utilization of the computer system.
  • Accurately documents charges for procedures and equipment used while a patient is in the ED.
