About The Position

The Emergency Room Communication/MedCom Specialist coordinates Emergency department communications through telephone and/or radio call intake. This role communicates and collaborates to facilitate efficient and timely emergency medical services (EMS) assignments to ensure quality patient care and customer service. The specialist receives and sends communications via telephone, fax, intranet, and radio, prioritizing incoming calls based on emergency or non-emergency nature. They record information in a communication tracking system, enter bed requests in tele tracking, and update status changes. The role also involves communicating with other stakeholders to make decisions on patient placement and determine required interventions, relaying medical care information and instructions to inbound EMS agencies based on protocols or direct physician orders. Additionally, the specialist facilitates communications between staff and other outside entities pertinent to patient care, monitors pending communications and requests, distributes communication devices, communicates with leadership, maintains EMS drug box inventory, and participates in performance improvement projects.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Effective interpersonal, communication, and teamworking skills.
  • Basic skills in computer/typing, Windows applications.
  • Ability to function independently.

  • Prior EMT or 911 dispatch experience.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains EMS drug box inventory and oversees the trading out of used or expired drug boxes.
