About The Position

The Suffolk County’s Bureau of Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP), within the Health Department’s Division of Public Health, is seeking to fill the position of Emergency Preparedness Officer. A provisional appointment, which occurs only in the competitive class, is a temporary appointment to a position for which no eligible list exists or for which an eligible list exists with fewer than three candidates who are willing to accept the position. In order to become permanent, the employee who is provisionally appointed must take the next examination for the position in question. The appointment to the position is then made from among the three highest scoring passing candidates who indicate their willingness to accept the position. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Emergency Management, Homeland Security, or a related field OR Bachelor’s degree in any field plus one year of experience in emergency program planning, emergency services training, and/or fire safety management, OR High school graduation or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and 5 years of experience in emergency program planning, emergency services training, and/or fire safety management.

Responsibilities

  • Develop plans and conduct drills to ensure that Suffolk County is prepared to respond to a variety of public health emergencies.
  • Supports the mission through management of the Department’s emergency preparedness assets
  • Attending planning meetings with local and state agencies
  • Assisting with composition / revision of emergency plans and the conduction of drills
