About The Position

Primary responsibility will be providing patient care to the patients of the Emergency Departments. This role involves performing the entire patient care continuum for all patients presenting to the Emergency Department, from initial assessments to arranging appropriate disposition. The physician will utilize available physician resources, demonstrate high confidence in treating patients, and provide primary patient care including high acuity cases often needing procedures. Additionally, the role includes reviewing labs/x-ray reports, medication refills, patient referrals, patient education, health maintenance, and symptom management for acute and chronic diseases. The physician will also serve in an educator role for staff, participate in management/administrative/organizational duties, attend meetings, maintain schedules, and participate in monthly committees to improve patient care. This includes assisting in the screening/evaluation process for prospective employees, staffing, and management, as well as developing policies and procedures. Participation in data collection and quality management activities, using available data to drive ongoing professional practice improvement, and assimilating feedback are crucial. The physician will actively participate in piloting improvement projects, organizational initiatives, team building exercises, section meetings, and semi-annual provider reviews. Maintaining patient medical records, increasing accuracy and pertinent information capture, and assimilating feedback related to Documentation and Coding for appropriate billing capture are also key responsibilities. The role requires participation in a monthly call shift, maintaining continuing education and ER requirements (ACLS and PALS), and maintaining communication with hospital and medical staff. All documentation requirements, including transfer of patients to other facilities in full compliance with EMTALA, must be met. Other functions as required will also be performed.

Requirements

  • M.D./D.O. in Emergency Medicine.
  • New Mexico State M.D. License required.
  • Three to five years experience in emergency care and/or residency trained in emergency medicine to care for patients of all ages, newborn to geriatrics.
  • Maintains continuing education and ER requirements, i.e. ACLS and PALS.

Responsibilities

  • Performs entire patient care continuum to all patients who present to the Emergency Department.
  • Performing initial assessments, appropriate ordering/interpretation of diagnostics, exercising treatment algorithms (including treatment of abscesses, laceration repair, and fracture stabilization and splinting), and arranging for appropriate disposition (including admissions) for patients ranging from newborn to geriatric.
  • Utilizes available physician resources appropriately.
  • Demonstrates high confidence in treating patients.
  • Available for Primary Patient Care to include care of high acuity patients (ESI 1-5) often needing procedures that include but are not limited to running codes, conscious sedation, airway management with LMA/intubation/cricothyrotomy, ultrasound guided central lines, joint aspiration, lumbar puncture as well as joint and fracture reductions.
  • Additionally review of labs/x-ray reports, medication refills, patient referrals, patient education, health maintenance and symptom management in acute and chronic disease for patients age newborn to geriatric.
  • Serves in an educator role for staff RNs, ER Techs, APC students and residents as needed.
  • Serves in management/administrative/organizational role to include attending meetings and maintaining schedules.
  • Participation in monthly committees to improve patient care.
  • Assists in the screening/evaluation process for prospective employees, staffing and management.
  • Assists in the development of policies and procedures for clinical areas conforming to JACHO, regulatory agencies and PHS/EH
  • Participates in data collection and quality management activities.
