Requirements

Unrestricted license to practice medicine in any other US State or Territory.
Board Certified in Emergency medicine.
MD or DO and be capable of treating patients of all ages.
Current DEA.
Current certification in BLS, ACLS, and PALS by way of an American Heart training program (AHA or Red Cross).

Responsibilities

Provide immediate medical evaluation, examination, diagnosis, treatment, and/or referral of patients who present for care in the ED.
Provide professional advice to other VA providers regarding professional management of patients in their fast-track portion of the Emergency Department.
Cover the range of emergency room care typically provided in an urban civilian practice of similar size.
Estimated 95% direct patient care, 5% estimated administrative responsibility not involved in direct patient care.
Treat major trauma, including fractures of multiple extremities, stab wounds, open wounds of the chest and abdomen, head trauma, suspected spine injuries, lacerations, amputations.
Treat major medical emergencies such as cardiac arrest, myocardial infarction, respiratory failure, shock.
Treat obstetrical emergencies such as deliveries of single or multiple births, acute pregnancy complications, vaginal bleeding.
Treat pediatric emergencies, including neonatal resuscitations.
Treat acute psychiatric problems, including suicide attempts.
Treat lower-acuity complaints including viral illnesses, other infections, minor orthopedic problems, minor trauma, alcohol abuse (i.e. "urgent care” patients).
Treat other miscellaneous medical problems both acute and chronic.
