About The Position

Essentia Health is seeking an Emergency Medicine Physician to join its regional team based in Duluth, Minnesota, with the goal of filling the position in 2027. The team provides emergency care in urban and rural settings through a hub-and-spoke model. Physicians generally work about half their shifts in Duluth and half at a subset of six regional emergency departments, with flexible scheduling among teammates. Physicians work across Duluth and regional sites, choosing a mix of locations that suits them. In Duluth, the physician will work in a new, 40-bed emergency department with annual volume of approximately 42,000 patients. The site has double and triple physician coverage, additional advanced practice provider support seven days a week, and 8- and 9-hour shifts. It offers a full spectrum of emergency care, including pediatrics, and admits patients to St. Mary’s Medical Center, a 330-bed tertiary referral center and Level I Adult and Level II Pediatric Trauma Center. The hospital has adult and pediatric subspecialties and collaborative specialist teams. Teaching opportunities with family medicine residents and medical students are available for interested physicians. Regional sites are Aurora, Virginia, Moose Lake, Sandstone, Deer River, and Superior, Wisconsin. These emergency departments see approximately 3,500–12,000 patients annually, are all Level IV trauma centers, and admit patients to their own hospitals. More complex patients are often transferred to Duluth. Virginia and Superior have 12-hour physician shifts with 12 hours of APP support. Aurora, Moose Lake, Sandstone, and Deer River have single coverage with 12-hour or optional 24-hour shifts; working 24-hour shifts is not required. Commutes from Duluth range from 10 to 70 minutes, except Deer River, where only a couple of team members work. Telemedicine support is available for stroke, psychiatry, NICU, hospice, and cardiology. The role offers a supportive, collaborative work environment, including strong nursing teams and behavioral health resources. Compensation is $255.08 per hour; hired candidates may be eligible for additional bonuses, quality incentives, or production-based compensation. The position is listed at 1.0 FTE. The posting describes a day/night rotation and states there is no call obligation and no weekend or holiday requirement.
