About The Position

West Virginia University Medicine (WVUM), Department of Emergency Medicine and Healthnet are working together, seeking an Emergency Medicine Medical Director to serve in Aeromedical Service and the WVUM Emergency Department. The successful candidate will be expected to oversee the Emergency Medicine practices for the Department of Emergency Medicine at Ruby Memorial Hospital as well as the Aeromedical practice. This position is full-time (1.0 FTE). The successful candidate will practice in the areas of Emergency Medicine. In addition to providing excellent patient care, the successful candidate may also be actively involved in teaching medical students and residents. The Clinical Medical Director will also be primary contact for all physicians and advance practice professionals working in the emergency departments at Ruby Memorial Hospital and surrounding sites.

Requirements

  • MD or DO degree or foreign equivalent.
  • Eligible for state medical license.
  • ABMS board certified in Emergency Medicine.
  • Completion of an Emergency Medicine Residency program.
  • One year of emergency department and/or public safety experience.
  • Expertise in the immediate care and transport of the critically-ill or injured patient.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull and transfer boxes or equipment up to twenty-four pounds.
  • Ability to twist upper body while moving boxes and/or equipment.
  • Ability to stand, walk climb, balance, reach, stoop, bend, and crouch for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to smell and identify odors.
  • Ability to use close, distant, and [peripheral vision, depth perception, and visual focus.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and transfer patients of high weights with limited resources.
  • Ability to twist upper body while moving patients and/or equipment.
  • Ability to clearly hear and interpret voice, two-way radio, and telephone communication.
  • Ability to successfully complete initial and recurrent physical examination including body weights.
  • Ability to successfully complete initial and recurrent physical agility test.

Nice To Haves

  • Three or more years of experience in emergency departments and/or public safety experience and expertise in the immediate care and transport of the critically ill or injured patient.
  • Demonstrated interest, knowledge and ability in the leadership, financial, managerial, and marketing aspects of emergency medicine.
  • Meets and maintains State Licensure and credentialing requirements for the hospitals.
  • Demonstrates ability to speak effectively on administrative and clinical matters related to emergency medicine.
  • Possess the ability to appropriately focuses on the audience, whether administrators, medical staff members, EMS providers, or the lay public.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Emergency Medicine practices for the Department of Emergency Medicine at Ruby Memorial Hospital as well as the Aeromedical practice.
  • Serve as the primary contact for all physicians and advance practice professionals working in the emergency departments at Ruby Memorial Hospital and surrounding sites.
  • Maintain competency in critical care transport treatment modalities including but not limited to: altitude physiology and the stresses of flight; infection control in air and ground patient transportation; stress management techniques; air medical program safety; biomedical equipment appropriate to the transport environment; hazardous materials recognition and response; emergency medical services continuous improvement process; working knowledge of state legislation related to emergency medical services; regional mass causality and disaster plans; emergency medical services dispatch and communications; appropriate utilization of critical care transport services; air medical recourse management; sleep deprivation; circadian rhythm; fatigue management.
  • Maintain authority over clinical practice and collaborate with clinical leaders, educators, and quality improvement staff, as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with clinical leaders, educators, and continuous improvement staff as appropriate in determining the qualifications, selection, training, continuing education, and competency evaluations of clinical personnel.
  • Supervise and evaluate the quality of patient care provided by clinical personnel.
  • Submit documentation to licensing and certifying boards, as appropriate.
  • Ensure that clinical personnel meet requirements set forth by appropriate governmental entities.
  • Insure that rules and requirements set forth for Medical Directors as developed by the West Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services are met and maintained.
  • Collaborate with clinical leaders, educators, and continuous improvement staff in the selection, retention, and use of medical equipment, expendable supplies and drugs, as appropriate and in keeping the program's mission.
  • Participate in the development and revision of program medical guidelines and collaborate with the WVOEMS Medical Protocol and Curriculum Committee on changes to state medical guidelines.
  • Annually, and as required, review and revise HealthNet Aeromedical Services clinically focused policies and procedures.
  • Assist in resolving disputes regarding medical control and patient care related issues.
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects.
  • Supervise and direct the Associate Medical Director(s).
  • Participate in staff meetings and educational programs and/or unscheduled visits and/or ride alongs to each base at least twice yearly.
  • Participate in activities of the Air Medical Physician's Association.
