About The Position

Inova Fair Oaks Hospital is seeking a dedicated Emergency Medical Technician to join its Emergency Department team. The role provides patient-care support, including continuous cardiac monitoring; collecting, documenting, and reporting vital signs; accurate patient registration; and following medical standard operating procedures for patient intervention. The EMT documents procedures and therapies in patients’ medical records, prepares wounds for surgery according to protocol, and provides wound care in accordance with department clinical practice standards.

The position also supports patient transport, specimen collection and handling, ECG acquisition, equipment and supply inventory, and monitoring patients’ progress and reporting deviations to the Registered Nurse. The posting describes a full-time night-shift role (6:45 p.m.–7:15 a.m.) with rotating weekends, and separately lists a full-time day-shift schedule (6:45 a.m.–7:15 p.m.) consisting of three 12-hour shifts. The ideal candidate must be able to attend six weeks of training.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
• EMT-B certification.
• Must be active on the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) or possess a current Virginia EMT license/certification.
• Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
• Computer skills.
• Ability to attend six weeks of training.

Responsibilities

• Place patients on continuous cardiac monitoring and collect, document, and report patient vital-sign data.
• Register patients accurately, efficiently, and professionally to maintain database integrity and facilitate claims processing.
• Request prior electrocardiograms for Medical Director review when appropriate and follow medical standard operating procedures for patient intervention.
• Document procedures and therapies in patients’ medical records.
• Perform surgical preparation of wounds according to protocol and provide wound care in accordance with department clinical practice standards.
• Stabilize and immobilize the spine and properly fit extremity splints; assess neurovascular status after splint application and report deviations to the Registered Nurse and physician.
• Assist with patient transport for testing, admission, discharge, interfacility transfer, and aeromedical transport according to Operating Unit policy; arrange interfacility transport from freestanding Emergency departments.
• Collect patient specimens according to department and facility policies and procedures; assist mid-level providers and physicians with collecting, labeling, and transporting irretrievable specimens.
• Maintain equipment and supply inventory and coordinate with materials management to ensure appropriate stock and minimize outdated stock.
• Obtain 12-lead ECGs as ordered by a physician and provide the ECG to the physician immediately upon completion.
• Review Medical Director orders related to disease state, monitor patient progress toward expected outcomes, and report deviations to the Registered Nurse.
• Follow computer-system and department operational procedures and training guidelines to obtain accurate demographic, diagnosis, and insurance information.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
