About The Position

The Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (EMT-B) works with the Director of Ground Transportation and EMT-P as part of the inter-facility transportation service for the Health Care District. Duties include driving the ambulance to transport patients between facilities, offering basic medical support, and working as part of the transport team running BLS calls. After each transport, responsibilities include restocking and replacing used linens, blankets and other supplies; cleaning all equipment following appropriate disinfecting and infection control procedures; making a careful check of all equipment so that the ambulance is ready for the next transport; maintaining the ambulance in efficient operating condition; ensuring that the ambulance is clean and washed and kept in a neat, orderly condition. In accordance with local, state or federal regulations, decontaminating the interior of the vehicle after transport of patient with contagious infection or hazardous materials exposure. Determining that the ambulance is in proper mechanical condition by checking items required by service management. This role may require Agency of Health Care Administration (AHCA) background screening and clearance. Requirements

  • Must have a basic understanding of stress response and methods to ensure personal well-being.
  • Must have an understanding of body substance isolation.
  • Must be able to provide medical care to include but not limited to the National Scope of Practice Model: Opening and maintaining an airway, Ventilating patients, manage general medical complaints of altered mental status, respiratory, cardiac, diabetic, allergic reaction, seizures, and psychological crises.
  • Must be able to assist patients with prescribed medications, including sublingual nitroglycerin, epinephrine auto-injectors and hand-held aerosol inhalers.
  • Must be able to administer oxygen and oral glucose.
  • Must be able to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation, including use of automated external defibrillators.
  • Must be able to avoid mishandling and undue haste while working to accomplish the task.
  • Must be able to reassure patients by working in a confident, efficient manner.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to place the stretcher in the ambulance and ensure the patient and stretcher are secured.
  • Must be able to assist in lifting and carrying the patient out of the ambulance and into the receiving facility.
  • Must report verbally and in writing any observations or medical care in transit to the receiving facility for purposes of records and diagnostics.
  • Must provide assistance to the receiving facility upon request.
  • Must restock and replace used linens, blankets and other supplies after each transport.

  • Must determine that the ambulance is in proper mechanical condition by checking items required by service management.
  • Must be the lead provider on BLS transports.
  • Must be the lead provider on discharges back to residence or skilled nursing facility.
  • Must be able to assist in the Emergency Department at Lakeside Medical Center or other HCDPBC’s business units within your scope of practice during downtime.
  • Must complete daily Ambulance checklist.
  • Must maintain all licensure requirements.
  • Must attend continuing education and refresher training programs as required.
  • Must enter all required incidents and compliments into the Districts Incident Management System.
  • Must receive and understand direction, ask questions when appropriate, and manage time to work effectively and independently.
  • Must act in a manner that protects the integrity of the mission of the Health Care District.
  • Must be available for emergency duty, which may include assisting community or hospital based organizations or the Red Cross. Staff will be directed to perform other emergency duties based on clinical experience including, but not limited to, responses to threats or disasters, manmade or natural.
