About The Position

Performs various skilled duties in the safe response to medical emergencies. Operates apparatus and vehicles responding to emergency medical service (EMS) alarms. Functions indoors (60%) and outdoors (40%) in all types of weather conditions and is exposed to traffic noises, electrical hazards, burns, mechanical hazards, explosives, and biohazards such as bodily fluids, debris, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, and poor ventilation. Protective clothing/devices include biological hazard protection (safety goggles, face mask, latex gloves). Physical demands in field operations are substantial involving balancing, bending, stooping, climbing in and out of vehicles, crouching, kneeling, squatting, and reaching above, below, and at shoulder height. Ability to lift equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, carry tools weighing up to 75 pounds, and push/pull a body weighing an average of 165 pounds. Requires hand coordination, motor skills, talking, hearing, and visual acuity sufficient to perform essential job functions. Required to pass the department Physical Performance Assessment. Position involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, frequent work beyond normal business hours, and responding to customer issues. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policies. Meeting or exceeding the minimum qualifications does not guarantee an invitation to participate in the process. Full-time regular, non-exempt position.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One (1) year of experience in an emergency medical care setting.
  • A Valid Class D driver’s license is required.
  • Current and valid New Mexico Emergency Medical Technician – Basic license is required.
  • Current and valid Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers certification is required.
  • Position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City of Las Cruces policies.
  • Must Pass: Written exam, Video Interview Assessment Board, Background investigation, Medical examination (includes drug screening and eye detect test).

Nice To Haves

  • New Mexico Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Intermediate or Paramedic license.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to emergency calls, quickly and efficiently respond to emergency calls, often under stressful conditions.
  • Conduct thorough patient assessments, including vital signs, medical history, and physical examinations; Administer medical care, provide basic life support (BLS), including CPR, AND First Aid.
  • Safely transport patients to appropriate medical facilities, ensuring patient comfort and safety during transit.
  • Inspect and maintain vehicles, apparatus, medical equipment and supplies.
  • Accurately document patient care, including assessment findings, treatments provided, and patient outcomes.
  • Stay current with emergency medical care protocols and procedures through ongoing training and education.
  • Drives, operates, and uses fire ambulance apparatus; ensures the arrival of various vehicles and equipment to EMS incidents, and other routine assignments.
  • Applies basic knowledge of risk and safety management to tactical situations.
  • Participates in regular physical fitness activities to maintain physical conditioning; maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  • Performs exceptional and seamless customer service; shows integrity and a commitment to innovation, efficiency, and fiscally responsible emergency medical service activity.
  • Administers emergency medical services, within their level of training and State of New Mexico EMT certification, to injured persons or other trauma victims.
