About The Position

The Hopkinsville Fire Department is currently accepting applications for full-time positions for Advanced Emergency Medical Technician and Emergency Medical Technician. The positions perform basic life support duties as a member of an ambulance response team. Work involves training for and participating in varied EMS duties that may require strenuous physical exertion under stressful and dangerous conditions. EMT duties may be conducted with indirect or limited supervision by a Paramedic. Reports to an assigned company officer and must closely adhere to specific protocols. EMT duties deal with emergency medical care, which involves prompt and efficient responses to patients under the direction of a medical coordinator or Paramedic. Efficient and orderly transport of patients and information to hospitals, accurate reporting and record keeping, and care of vehicles, supplies, and equipment are required. During life and death situations, decisions must be made at a moment’s notice. These full-time positions have the primary responsibility of delivering high quality ALS/BLS patient care to patients treated and transported by Hopkinsville Fire Department’s EMS Division.

Requirements

  • All positions require a high school diploma or GED, CPR certification, a valid driver’s license, and be licensed/certified by Kentucky Board of EMS OR currently registered with National Registry of EMTs.
  • Individuals must be able to move/lift over 100 lbs. on a regular basis.
  • Graduate of an accredited high school or equivalent.
  • Possess, present, and maintain evidence of certification as an Emergency Medical Technician by the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
  • Certification in CPR, HIV/AIDS awareness, Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma, and other classes to maintain EMT certification.
  • Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
  • Operate all medical equipment within the EMT scope of practice.
  • Meet all statutorily mandated standards.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain certifications as required by Kentucky regulations, City of Hopkinsville, and City of Hopkinsville Fire Department.
  • Thorough knowledge of City and Christian County geography and knowledge of ordinances or laws concerning use of public roads by emergency vehicles.
  • Communicate clearly and comprehend communication from others, in person or by two-way radio.
  • Efficiently and safely operate emergency vehicles in heavy traffic, inclement weather conditions, and various road surfaces.
  • Physical strength and agility to lift and carry patients, all emergency medical equipment, including operation and relocation of equipment.
  • Ability and manual dexterity to use all medical equipment.
  • Tolerate high personal risk and life threatening situations and still carry out assigned duties in a professional manner while maintaining sound judgment and decisiveness.
  • Maintain ambulance in efficient operating condition and ensure that they are kept in clean, neat, and orderly condition, including department structures, furnishings, and outside areas.
  • Maintain confidentiality, including information identified under HIPAA regulations.
  • Conduct inventory of all equipment and replace supplies as necessary.
  • Respond to emergency calls to provide pre-hospital emergency medical care to patients and transport patients to medical facilities.
  • Under direction of a Medical Director, Paramedic or Advanced EMT administer first aid, take vital signs and perform basic life support.
  • Knowledge of medications to include indication and contraindication of side effects and the ability to calculate the proper dosage.
  • Transport patients to and from ambulances to receive appropriate medical care.
  • Maintain certification in CPR, HIV/AIDS awareness, Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma and any and all other classes to maintain EMT certification.
  • Successfully complete all state and/or national mandated certifications.
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned.
