About The Position

The Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority (KCEAA) is seeking individuals to join their Fall 2026 EMT Academy. This is an immersive, hands-on training program that provides full EMT certification and field experience while participants are paid as KCEAA employees. The program includes classroom instruction, clinical rotations, and field ride time with experienced providers. Upon successful completion, participants will be eligible to take the National Registry EMT Examination and will transition into full-time EMT roles with KCEAA. This is a mission-critical position requiring flexibility in shifts and availability during adverse weather and short notice.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • WV driver’s license with safe driving record
  • Ability to pass background check and drug screening
  • Passion for public service and helping others
  • Strong work ethic, teamwork, and integrity
  • Ability to handle pressure, remain calm and patient, and make quick decisions
  • Ability and willingness to work any assigned shift or position following certification
  • Willingness to learn and grow with KCEAA

Responsibilities

  • Participate in classroom instruction, clinical rotations, and field ride time.
  • Obtain EMT certification.
  • Work any assigned shift or position following certification.
  • Report to work during adverse weather, on holidays, and on short notice.
  • Work beyond scheduled shifts as requested.
  • Perform duties in various outdoor weather conditions, near moving mechanical parts, and in environments with potential exposure to fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, and heat.
  • Handle exposure to blood, saliva, and other body substances.
  • Manage interactions with irrational, combative patients and bystanders.
  • Lift, carry, push, and pull a minimum of 150 pounds independently and 300 pounds or more with assistance.
  • Frequently stand, walk, sit, operate equipment, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
  • Maneuver through challenging obstacles.
  • Utilize finger dexterity, manual dexterity, multilimbed coordination, and arm-hand steadiness.
