About The Position

The Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority (KCEAA) is seeking individuals for their Fall 2026 EMT Academy. This is an immersive, hands-on training program that provides full EMT certification and field experience while participants are paid as KCEAA employees. The program includes classroom instruction, clinical rotations, and field ride time with experienced providers. Upon successful completion, graduates will be eligible to take the National Registry EMT Examination and will transition into full-time EMT roles with KCEAA. This is a mission-critical position requiring employees to report to work during adverse weather, holidays, and on short notice, and to be available for any assigned shift or position, potentially working beyond scheduled hours.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • WV driver’s license with a safe driving record
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screening
  • Passion for public service and helping others
  • Strong work ethic, teamwork, and integrity
  • Ability to handle pressure, remain calm and patient, and make quick decisions
  • Ability and willingness to work any assigned shift or position following certification
  • Willingness to learn and grow with KCEAA

Responsibilities

  • Participate in classroom instruction, clinical rotations, and field ride time.
  • Obtain EMT certification.
  • Pass the National Registry EMT Examination.
  • Transition into full-time EMT roles upon successful completion and certification.
  • Report to work during adverse weather, on holidays, and on short notice.
  • Be available for any assigned shift or position as requested by KCEAA.
  • Work beyond the scheduled shift as requested or until properly relieved/released.
  • Work in outside weather conditions year-round.
  • Operate equipment with tools and controls.
  • Maneuver through challenging obstacles.
  • Lift, carry, push, and pull a minimum of 150 pounds independently and 300 pounds or more with assistance.
  • Frequently stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
  • Utilize finger dexterity, manual dexterity, multilimbed coordination, and arm-hand steadiness.
