About The Position

Medavie Health Services West (MHSW) is seeking an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) to join their team. MHSW is responsible for the operation and management of EMS Services in Central Alberta. As an integrated, pre-hospital care organization, MHSW is part of Medavie, a health services organization committed to improving the health of all Canadians. The EMR will provide timely transportation between appropriate facilities, requiring a high level of professionalism, communication, and knowledge. The role involves operating in the public eye and requires conducting oneself in a safe and discreet manner, with accountability to patients, family members, hospital staff, management, public agencies, and the legal system. Employees are expected to support safety initiatives and foster a culture of patient safety and a respectful workplace.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Alberta Operators License class 1, 2 or 4.
  • Current registration with the Alberta College of Paramedics
  • Completion of Alberta Health Services MCP’s
  • Certified in and maintains CPR certification.
  • Must be in good physical health with no disabilities that will impair duties as a EMR.
  • Considerable lifting and movement of heavy patients.
  • Will need to extricate patients from hazardous environments.
  • Will advise superintendent of injuries that will impair duties.

Responsibilities

  • Provide timely transportation between appropriate facilities.
  • Maintain personal knowledge and skills in accordance with the Alberta Occupational Competency Profile (AOCP) to deliver optimum patient care.
  • Safely operate MHS - West vehicles in accordance with the MHS - West Health and Safety Manual, Operational Guidelines, and all provincial and federal regulations.
  • Stock and maintain vehicles in a state of readiness at all times.
  • Work in hazardous environments to ensure the safety of the patient.
  • Collaborate with outside agencies as a team in a coordinated effort on behalf of the patient.
  • Document all patient care, assessments, and skills within the patient care report in a timely and legible fashion.
  • Be punctual and ready to respond at the start of their shift.
  • Act in a professional manner and handle conflict situations with good judgment.
  • Follow the MHS - West chain of command.
  • Create and maintain fully completed patient care reports (ePCRs).
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with all provincial and federal regulations.
  • Refer all media requests to the General Manager of MHS - West.
  • Report all incidents and complete written incident report forms to the General Manager of MHS - West or designate.
  • Maintain educational competencies as required by the Alberta College of Paramedics.
  • Maintain functional awareness of MHS - West Operational Guidelines and AHS medical control guidelines.
  • Participate actively in the MHS - West Quality Assurance Program.
  • Actively participate in public awareness and community education programs approved by MHS - West.
  • Maintain professional appearance of the approved uniform and maintain hygienic and grooming standards.
