This position is in the Life Safety maintenance area of Building Services and requires familiarity and proficiency with various manufacturers of emergency generators and transfer switches on campus. The role involves performing journey-level tasks across multiple trades, including Electrical, Mechanical, and Vehicle/Equipment repair. It demands in-depth analysis and problem-solving for complex building systems, with the ability to prioritize and make independent decisions during power outages to restore power to critical research and medical buildings. The position requires expertise in three-phase electrical circuits up to 4000A and 480V, including repair and troubleshooting using multi-meters and power monitoring equipment, and replacement of electronic control boards. Installation and repair of electrical raceways and conductors to support shop-maintained systems are also key responsibilities. The role requires compliance with the University’s Arc Flash requirements. Due to increased campus needs, particularly in animal and BSL3 research labs, the position must understand complex transfer switches, load shedding, and control systems with programming to manage generator load balancing. This includes ensuring critical loads like fire pumps are maintained without overloading infrastructure, and meeting emissions and maintenance requirements. The position also involves routine maintenance such as changing fluids, cleaning equipment and areas, painting equipment, and maintaining a clean shop and service vehicle. Emergency response duties for weather events are expected. The role requires a working knowledge of electronic principles and specialized test equipment for designing, installing, programming, testing, and troubleshooting complex interconnected systems. Responsibilities include the repair and maintenance of complex diesel fuel delivery systems with electronic/digital and mechanical controls, and potentially reworking systems for improved reliability. Strong knowledge of plumbing installation methods and hydrodynamics is necessary. The position is responsible for the inspection, testing, and maintenance of diesel fire pump engines in accordance with NFPA 20 and NFPA 25 standards. Additionally, it involves preventive maintenance and repair of small engine equipment like portable generators, pressure washers, blowers, and gas-operated saws, requiring a basic mechanical understanding of two-stroke and four-stroke engines and mechanical pumps. Repairs on heavy equipment, including backhoes and skid steers, are also part of the role, requiring strong mechanical knowledge of hydraulics.
