About The Position

Assists physicians and registered nurses in providing technical care to patients in the Emergency Department. This role involves performing various procedures, monitoring patients, documenting care, and coordinating communications. The technician must be knowledgeable about age-specific patient care and maintain a safe working environment. They will also be responsible for equipment monitoring and maintenance, as well as patient positioning and transportation, which may involve lifting and pushing/pulling.

Requirements

  • Nurse Aide in good standing as indicated with the State Registry in which the TM practices.
  • OR Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic license issued through national registry or by the state in which the TM practices.
  • OR Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic Intravenous license issued through national registry or by the state in which the TM practices.
  • OR Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Intermediate license issued through national registry or by the state in which the TM practices.
  • OR Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Paramedic license issued through national registry or by the state in which the TM practices.
  • OR Completion of an accredited or approved program in Medical Assistant.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.
  • High School Graduate.
  • Typically requires 1 year experience.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to work with Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with physicians, staff, patients and their families.
  • Must maintain skill and recertification as required by regulation and organization.
  • Ability to effectively manage time and priorities.
  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Team members will maintain annual educational requirements for hospital based certifications (e.g.DNV, CARF or others).
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, reach above shoulders, and twist frequently during work shift.
  • Must be able to: Lift up to 50 lbs from floor to waist.
  • Must be able to: Lift up to 20 lbs over the head.
  • Must be able to: Carry up to 40 lbs a reasonable distance.
  • Must be able to: Push/pull with 30 lbs of force.
  • Must be able to: Perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs with a second person present.
  • Will be required to use foot pedals on carts or machines.
  • Must have functional sight and hearing.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.

Responsibilities

  • Performing phlebotomy, transporting patients, placing patients on cardiac and vital sign monitors, performing wound care, inserting Foley catheters, and obtaining lab specimens.
  • May perform IV starts if allowed by state regulations.
  • Documenting information/procedures and promptly communicating observations, concerns, and patient needs to the registered nurse.
  • Processing daily patient charges and/or related procedures through the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Collaborating with physicians to support communications required to facilitate patient care.
  • Coordinating and facilitating all forms of communications (phone, verbal, paging, electronic, fax, and EMS system).
  • Maintaining a clean and safe working environment, following department safety policies and standard precautions.
  • Monitoring equipment and troubleshooting minor problems, and arranging repair of major malfunctions.
  • Performing various patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique.
  • Demonstrating knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possessing the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.
