About The Position

The Emergency Department RN Transition to Practice Program is a 12-week training designed to meet individual learning needs within South Shore Health's Level II Trauma Center. This program provides hands-on nursing experience in patient assessment, care planning, and care delivery. Successful participants will be offered a full-time shift position in the Emergency Department upon completion.

Requirements

Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
RN - Registered Nurse
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification may be required
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification may be required
Emergency Response Training Certification may be required
Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certification may be required
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) may be required
Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) may be required
Trauma Care After Resuscitation (TCAR) Certification may be required
ACLS (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification - American Heart Association (AHA)

Responsibilities

Manages individualized, outcome-oriented nursing care through the use of the nursing process.
Provides care, treatment, and services through the successful coordination and completion of assessment, care planning, and care provision, in accordance with departmental and hospital policies and procedures.
Administers, transcribes, and records medications according to SSH policies and procedures.
Completes medication reconciliation processes.
Manages narcotic withdrawal, administration, counts, and waste according to policy.
Develops, discusses, and communicates a prioritized problem list/plan of care for each patient.
Develops, evaluates, and updates individualized patient care plans and documents outcomes.
Initiates admission assessments within 8 hours of admission and identifies and documents patient/family/significant other teaching needs.
Continues assessment/reassessment and identifies care needs within established nursing practice.
Documents all patient care following department of nursing policy, unit-based standards, disease processes, and nurse-sensitive indicators.
Assesses/reassesses and documents patient's level of comfort and response to interventions.
Works on behalf of patients/families and seeks help to represent them when they are unable to represent themselves.
Raises ethical questions and concerns with the clinical team and seeks resources to understand ethical decisions.
Actively communicates the plan of the day via whiteboard, updating every shift.
Facilitates discharge/transfer by the goal of 12:00 PM and communicates barriers utilizing the chain of command.
Fosters a 'Culture of Safety' through personal ownership and commitment to a safe environment.
Verifies patient identification with two identifiers prior to any invasive procedure, including 'time out', administration of care, medications, and labeled specimens.
Complies with current CDC hand hygiene guidelines, adheres to universal precautions, and makes appropriate use of personal protective equipment.
Ensures the environment meets regulatory requirements at all times.
Understands and demonstrates individual roles and responsibilities in the event of hospital codes/emergency preparedness.
Assumes overall responsibility for own professional development by incorporating evidenced-based practice, research, and performance improvement initiatives.
Obtains at least 5 contact hours per year in the area of practice.
Practices within the legal boundaries of the MA Nurse Practice Act and directs other licensed and non-licensed personnel as assigned.
