The Emergency Department (ED) Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing patient and family-centered care, recognizing the patient or designee as the source of control and full partner in providing compassionate and coordinated care based on respect for patient’s preferences, values, and needs. The role involves delivering developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive, evidence-based care, and actively anticipating changes in patient outcomes and unit needs. The nurse will communicate and advocate patient values, preferences, and expressed needs to the interdisciplinary team, initiating and anticipating individualized care and education for patients and families across the continuum using an interdisciplinary approach. This position requires functioning effectively within nursing and inter-professional teams, fostering open communication, mutual respect, and shared decision-making to achieve quality patient care. The nurse will integrate best current evidence with clinical expertise and patient/family preferences and values for the delivery of optimal health care, identifying key concepts of research and evidence-based practice and participating in structuring the work environment to facilitate the integration of new evidence into standards of practice. Additionally, the role involves using data to monitor the outcomes of care processes and employing improvement methods to continuously improve the quality and safety of healthcare systems, utilizing outcome data at the patient level to make care decisions and participating in quality improvement activities. Minimizing risk of harm to patients and providers through both system effectiveness and individual performance is crucial, as is using information and technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision-making, including navigating and documenting in the EMR. As agents of change, nurses are involved in committees, professional development, and supporting organizational goals, while also acting as active participants in the community. They support organizational goals, advance the nursing profession, and enhance professional development by extending their influence to professional and community groups, working within their scope of practice and delegating according to the Nurse Practice Act, and participating in shared governance activities. Opportunities for professional development, such as continuing education, certification, community service, and precepting, are encouraged.
