About The Position

The UF Small Animal Hospital is recruiting a motivated, organized, and compassionate Blood Bank Veterinary Technician to join our elite Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) service in beautiful Gainesville, Florida. This position offers an incredible Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM schedule. As the cornerstone of our Small Animal Blood Bank, you aren't just running tests, you are saving lives, managing a unique community program, and shaping the future of veterinary medicine. Your days will be dynamic, engaging, and deeply impactful.

Requirements

  • Must be a Credentialed Veterinary Technician (CVT/LVT/RVT/LVMT).
  • Physical capability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs and stand, bend, or kneel for extended periods during prolonged collection procedures.
  • Health Assessment Required: Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 lbs, bend, kneel, push, pull, twist and stand for an extended period of time.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate of an accredited veterinary technology program.
  • Elite phlebotomy and IV catheter placement skills.
  • Strong background in animal nursing and critical care.
  • Familiarity with veterinary software (Cornerstone, MediaLab) and standard lab equipment.
  • A calm, professional demeanor capable of thriving and communicating effectively in a bustling hospital environment.

Responsibilities

  • Run our canine and feline donor programs, including scheduling "happy visits" for canine donors and managing the feline colony.
  • Coordinate the adoption process for retiring donors.
  • Process whole blood into life-saving components (PRBC, FFP, autotransfusion kits, and ophthalmic serum).
  • Manage inventory, supply chain, and billing systems for the blood bank.
  • Teach and demonstrate transfusion techniques to veterinary students, interns, residents, and faculty.
  • Drive public relations efforts, featuring donors in Facebook spotlights and sending "Thank You" notes to clients.
  • Maintain the state-of-the-art facility, ensuring compliance and smooth operation.
  • Attend professional conferences and earn CE credits.
  • Assist peers with their VTS applications.
