About The Position

The Emergency Care Tech provides quality patient care within the scope defined by the Nurse Practice Act and Trinity Competency Program. This role contributes to the design and implementation of improved processes to achieve quality and excellent patient care and service. Responsibilities include performing electrocardiograms, drawing blood specimens, preparing the unit and patient treatment area, assisting with data entry for patient dispositions, distributing nutrition service trays, and actively participating in data collection for CQI initiatives. The Tech also inspects patient rooms for cleanliness, assists the RN in patient care, observes and reports patient needs and conditions, takes and records vital signs, and responds to patient call lights immediately. They adhere to nursing policies and procedures, respond to emergency plans, and maintain unit cleanliness. Additionally, the Tech provides assistance to RN staff in triage, admission, transfer, and discharge of patients, transports and positions patients, provides postmortem care, fits crutches and teaches crutch walking, and observes and reports patient needs to the RN. The role also involves maintaining positive relationships with all customers, serving as a patient advocate, resolving patient concerns, and participating in customer satisfaction strategies. The Emergency Care Tech contributes to department and hospital innovation efforts, submits improvement ideas, identifies and implements improvements within their scope of responsibility, and utilizes creative measures to optimize customer satisfaction. They participate in an environment that supports management philosophy and hospital strategic plans, fostering an environment where Trinity values can flourish. This includes creating a cooperative team environment, participating in unit meetings, communicating and collaborating effectively with healthcare members, participating in planned changes, holding self and others accountable, and participating in recognition efforts. They assess their own learning needs, seek training, maintain competencies, demonstrate technical skills, and may train new Associates. The role also involves participating in hospital committees and the development of other team members' skills. Economically, the Tech assists with unit staffing requirements, is responsible for efficient utilization of resources, communicates inventory needs, participates in cost containment strategies, and manages their own time effectively.

Requirements

  • Certified as CNA, EMT, paramedic, or ERT with 2-3 yrs. of hospital or pre-hospital patient care experience or acceptance at an accredited medical school or completions of 2-3 years of nursing school clinical rotations or completion of a certified medical assisting program
  • Customer Focus Skills
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • CNA, EMT, ERT, MA certification
  • Current CPR certification
  • One year of ER experience is strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Performs electrocardiograms
  • Draws blood specimens according to policy and procedure manual for their people delivery to the laboratory in a timely manner. Performs capillary blood testing.
  • Prepares unit, patient treatment area and stretcher to receive patient including routine cleaning of area and equipment.
  • Demonstrates discretion; protects privacy of patient. Provides assistance by working with data entry entering appropriate information for patient dispositions.
  • Distributes nutrition service trays.
  • Actively participates in the collection, development and reporting of data for CQI initiatives. Inspects all patient rooms to ensure customer expectations and quality standards for cleanliness are met. Assists RN in provision of care to all assigned patients. Assists with application of posterior molds in orthopedic cases. Observation and timely reporting of patient needs and conditions to the RN. Take and record vital signs, weight, intake and output (I/O), as directed and notifies RN with abnormal results. Responds to patient’s call light immediately. Adheres to nursing policies, procedures and established nursing standards. Responds to emergency plans as directed by the department/unit responsibilities. Maintains unit cleanliness.
  • Provides assistance to RN staff in triage, admission, transfer and discharge of patient.
  • Transport, transfer, lift and position patients as directed, using proper body mechanics.
  • Provides postmortem care and assists in transport.
  • Fits crutches and teaches crutch walking to patients under supervision of RN.
  • Maintains positive relationships with all customers (e.g.: patients, significant others, physicians, and Associates).
  • Serves as patient advocate to ensure that patient’s and customer’s needs are met in a timely and efficient manner and individualizes each patient’s plan of care.
  • Resolves patient’s and customer’s concerns immediately using the defined Service Recovery scripts/process including using the Discretionary Fund.
  • Review Patient Satisfaction data and participate in development of the team’s Action Plan for ? as related to ?.
  • Participates in implementation of customer satisfaction strategies.
  • Submits improvement ideas for Trinity Hospital and its services and participates in the implementation process as appropriate.
  • Identifies improvement ideas within scope of responsibility, and assumes accountability for implementation and communication of plans and results.

  • Utilizes creative measures to optimize customer satisfaction.
  • Participates with other Associates to create a cooperative team environment.
  • Actively participates in unit meetings. Provides positive suggestions for improvement of nursing services.
  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with physicians, nurses, directors and other healthcare members to assure delivery of quality care in a high stress environment.
  • Participates in implementing planned changes and activities to improve nursing services, working environment or patient care.
  • Holding self and others accountable for clinical practice.
  • Participates in recognition efforts of team and hospital.
  • Cross-train to unit functions as necessary to achieve optimal unit flexibility.
  • Ensures appropriate staffing coverage for subsequent shifts.
  • Suggests productivity improvement ideas.
  • Delegates patient care activities as appropriate for skill levels with documented competency plan.
  • Flexible in meeting the staffing requirements of the unit.
  • Assesses own learning needs, seeks appropriate training and development. Sets own objective and goals.
  • Maintains and support Accrediting Organization requirements in regards to competencies (i.e., CPR certification, safety and infection control, current licensure hospital/unit based certification standards).
  • Demonstrates appropriate technical skills for clinical competency.
  • As competence is demonstrated, may be asked to train new Associates to practice function and responsibilities and serve as a learning coach.
  • Participates in hospital committees, DIGs, JDIs.
  • Participates in development of other team members technical and interpersonal skills to improve patient care.
  • Assists with unit staffing requirements by accurately communicating team needs and patient acuity.
  • Responsible for efficient utilization of all resources within scope of practice.
  • Communicates inventory needs/adjustments to Charge Nurse/ Manager.
  • Participates in cost containment practice strategies.
  • Assume own time management responsibility (including time & attendance, data entry, attention to overtime usage, etc.).
