About The Position

Boreal Veterinary Centre is seeking one full-time and two part-time Emergency Animal Care Assistants (ER ACAs) to join their dedicated team. The ACAs work 10-hour shifts, four days per week on a rotating schedule to provide seamless support to clients and veterinary staff. The primary focus will be on comfort care for Level 1 and 2 patients, with a heavy emphasis on quality of care. This position requires shift work, including evenings, weekends, and holidays based on rotation. The role is an accessory role to the medical team, assisting with treatments and updating owners, working under the direction of the RVT in charge of patient care.

Requirements

  • High school diploma
  • Able to stand for long periods of time (10 hours)
  • Able to lift 50lbs (22kg)
  • Compassion and patience
  • A strong desire to pursue an animal related post-secondary program
  • Strong patient restraint skills
  • Understanding of veterinary hospital flow
  • Strong communication skills
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology
  • Ability to be on time and prepared to work at the beginning of your scheduled shift
  • Ability to communicate with clients to provide general patient updates (both verbally and electronically), collect and process invoices, and arrange visits, discharges, etc.
  • Manage, direct and sort incoming calls and messages to the appropriate specialty/department
  • Knowledge of biosecurity

Responsibilities

  • Provide gold standard nursing and comfort care to patients.
  • Communicate effectively and clearly with clients regarding patient updates, invoices, and arrangements.
  • Manage, direct, and sort incoming calls and messages.
  • Provide a variety of oral nutrition options and hand feeding.
  • Provide environmental enrichment (kongs, toys, treats, ipads, music, feliway etc).
  • Ensure hospital "suites" are always clean and comfortable.
  • Monitor and encourage natural bathroom breaks.
  • Groom patients to ensure their coats are comfortable and clean.
  • Facilitate safe, organized family visits.
  • Clean kennels and prepare them for new patients.
  • Notify the medical team of any concerns regarding patient attitude, stress, or changes in appetite.
  • Document dietary intake, urination, defecation, and other fluid losses in detail.
  • Provide mentorship and support to the Kennel staff team.
  • Perform aftercare of deceased patients (to be double-checked by RVT).
  • Support and cross-train in reception duties.
  • Utilize messaging and invoicing functions.
