About The Position

The emergency and urgent care veterinarian has primary care responsibility; providing high-quality emergency and urgent care to small and exotic animals presenting to a veterinary teaching hospital. This role focuses on timely case management, effective collaboration with specialists, and clear communication with clients and referring veterinarians. This position involves active supervision, instruction of senior veterinary students during clinical rotations, working with interns and contributing to hands-on learning in an emergency care setting. The veterinarian supports hospitalized patient care while maintaining accurate medical documentation and fostering a positive, team-oriented clinical environment.

Requirements

  • A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent.
  • Licensed (or able to obtain licensing) with the Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association.
  • Minimum of two years of clinical practice experience or an internship
  • Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Effective organizational and time-management capabilities.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a team.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced training in emergency medicine is preferred.
  • Experience in clinical instruction, teaching, or mentorship is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Provides high-quality care to client-owned animals presenting for emergency or urgent treatment.
  • Oversees and delivers high-quality care to hospitalized patients in an acute care setting within a referral teaching hospital.
  • Promotes clear, effective communication among team members and across services in a collaborative and positive manner.
  • Builds and maintains strong professional relationships with clients, referring veterinarians, technicians, and other clinicians.
  • Maintains accurate, timely, and comprehensive medical records.
  • Provides educational opportunities and mentors veterinary technicians, veterinary students, and postgraduate veterinarians, including rotating interns.
  • Delivers feedback and completes formal assessments and grading for veterinary students in emergency and urgent care rotations.
  • Communicates and acts in a respectful and professional manner, collaborates effectively, abides by policy, and contributes to a positive and productive work and learning environment.
  • Engages in continuous learning by participating in activities, training, and events related to Indigenous engagement, reconciliation, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrates respect and dignity for all members of the community, actively contributes to an environment of acceptance and inclusion of others, and responds to different perspectives from a place of curiosity, respect, and non-judgement.
  • Undertakes related duties, as assigned, consistent with the nature of the position.
