Embedded Systems Intern

TactacamBillings, MT
Onsite

About The Position

The Embedded Software Intern will be a critical contributor to the design and stability of Tactacam's next-generation cellular-connected trail and security camera systems. This role supports the Embedded Engineering Lead (FW/Systems) by assisting in the development and maintenance of firmware for rugged, outdoor-rated electronics (IP66+). Operating within a Joint Development Manufacturing (JDM) framework, the intern will collaborate with internal engineering teams and offshore manufacturing partners. A primary focus will be ensuring design quality and firmware integrity throughout the development lifecycle, bridging the gap between high-level architectural requirements and mass production. This internship is designed as a direct pipeline to a full-time Electrical Engineer position upon graduation, with opportunities to return to the Billings office each summer for increasing responsibility and complex projects.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled as a Sophomore or Junior pursuing a degree in Computer Science.
  • A strong, demonstrated passion for learning and growth, particularly regarding complex, hands-on technical challenges like embedded systems and low-power design initiatives.
  • Exceptional collaborative and communication skills necessary for effective coordination with internal engineering teams and offshore Joint Development Manufacturing (JDM) partners.
  • High motivation and a proactive, self-starter approach, viewing the internship as a direct pipeline to a full-time role and seeking increasing responsibility over time.
  • Methodical and detail-oriented mindset essential for conducting firmware debugging, system validation (EVT, DVT, PVT), and thorough Defect Analysis (RCA/CAPA).
  • Strong organizational skills with an emphasis on maintaining clear technical documentation and ensuring accurate version-controlled firmware source code.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate firmware integration for cellular-connected devices utilizing low-power wireless protocols, including Wi-Fi, BLE, and Cat 1 Bis for remote monitoring.
  • Validate and support low-power design initiatives to optimize battery life for long-term field deployment.
  • Participate in firmware debugging and system validation across all New Product Introduction (NPI) phases, including Engineering Validation (EVT), Design Validation (DVT), and Production Validation (PVT).
  • Coordinate with offshore JDM FW teams to conduct code reviews and ensure architectural integrity across the firmware stack.
  • Conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) specifically for design defects and implement corrective actions (CAPA), while maintaining the boundary between design-side and manufacturing-line issues.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical documentation and firmware configurations for regulatory certifications (PTCRB, FCC, CE, and RoHS).
  • Maintain version-controlled firmware source code and generate detailed engineering test reports.
