About The Position

Caterpillar Inc. is hiring an Embedded Software Engineering Specialist for its Drivetrain Systems and Software Team at its facility in Chillicothe, Illinois. The role supports the development of transmission software and controls, combining technical leadership, hands-on development, and collaboration to ensure transmission system performance and quality. The specialist provides technical leadership in the design, development, and enhancement of transmission systems; works with machine and transmission application leads and software architects to plan, design, develop, test, and maintain transmission software; and integrates common software library modules and code generated by a code generation tool. The role also includes reviewing peers’ software architecture and activities, training and mentoring developers, testing and debugging embedded software, verifying software in a laboratory, and performing Model in the Loop (MIL) testing. The specialist provides technical direction for software and procedure design and implementation, and identifies and addresses weaknesses in finished products. This position is onsite five days per week. Travel and telecommuting are not available. Visa sponsorship is not available.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field, plus 8 years of experience developing and planning electronic control systems or embedded software for automotive, on-highway truck, or off-highway applications or a related occupation; alternatively, a master’s degree or foreign equivalent in one of these fields plus 6 years of such experience.
Employment experience with software development for real-time systems, C/C++ programming, Matlab/Simulink, real-time operating systems, and embedded software development tools and environments.
Employment experience developing embedded real-time software or systems for mobile, earthmoving, agricultural, industrial, and off-highway applications.
Employment experience applying CAN or J1939 data links for control and monitoring purposes.
Employment experience with ClearCase, git, Diab compiler, pOSEK, Matlab (The Mathworks) autocode generator, and Notepad++ Editor.
Employment experience with control systems, transmission systems or components, and electronic components.
Employment experience with Agile Software Development.
Employment experience with the Google test environment and test automation.
Employment experience with a code editor/code search tool, Lauterbach Debugger, ATI Vision, Vector tools, and AutoSAR architect.

Responsibilities

Support the development of transmission software and controls.
Provide technical leadership in designing, developing, and enhancing transmission systems to optimize products and systems.
Collaborate with machine and transmission application leads and software architects to plan, design, develop, test, and maintain transmission software.
Integrate common software library modules and source code generated by a code generation tool.
Perform architecture reviews of peers’ software activities.
Provide developer training and mentoring.
Test and debug embedded system software using available tools and methods to improve code quality and optimize system performance.
Perform laboratory verification of software and Model in the Loop (MIL) testing.
Provide technical leadership in designing and implementing software and procedures.
Provide technical direction to identify and address areas of product weakness in finished products.
