About The Position

AIM is hiring an Embedded Software Engineer focused on verification of autonomous heavy equipment. The role builds and maintains Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing capabilities to validate embedded software and hardware across machine platforms and configurations. The engineer will create automated test workflows, extend HIL infrastructure, investigate failures across products and test environments, and help ensure critical embedded functionality is validated during development and releases. The position works closely with Firmware, Electrical, and Systems Engineering as AIM expands its autonomous equipment fleet and verification processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 3 years of professional experience in embedded systems, verification, validation, or related engineering roles.
  • At least 1 year of professional experience focused on verification and test automation.
  • Hands-on experience developing and executing automated Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) tests.
  • Strong Python programming skills for test automation and working knowledge of C++.
  • Experience troubleshooting hardware, electrical interfaces, and software integration issues.
  • Experience testing safety-critical or mission-critical systems.
  • Ability to independently investigate failures and develop practical solutions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with HIL testing platforms such as dSPACE, National Instruments, or Typhoon HIL.
  • Experience with autonomous vehicles, automotive systems, robotics, aerospace, or heavy machinery.
  • Familiarity with embedded communication protocols such as CAN, SPI, I2C, UART, or Ethernet.
  • Experience developing or maintaining automated test frameworks.
  • Experience integrating hardware components into test benches.
  • Familiarity with continuous integration and automated regression testing.
  • Experience validating embedded control systems or real-time software.
  • Experience building automated HIL tests rather than only executing existing test procedures.
  • Ability to independently troubleshoot test benches and investigate difficult hardware and software failures.
  • Interest in automating repetitive testing and improving efficiency, with attention to test quality, repeatability, and edge cases.
  • Comfort building verification infrastructure while processes are still evolving.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain automated HIL tests for embedded software and hardware systems.
  • Convert manual test procedures into repeatable automated test workflows.
  • Develop Python-based test scripts, utilities, and automation frameworks.
  • Expand HIL test coverage across embedded controllers, sensors, actuators, and communication interfaces.
  • Maintain and improve HIL test benches and supporting infrastructure.
  • Extend HIL hardware and software configurations for additional machine platforms, including excavators and other heavy equipment.
  • Integrate hardware components, interfaces, and simulated inputs into verification environments.
  • Troubleshoot test equipment, wiring, electrical interfaces, and software configuration issues.
  • Investigate failures across embedded software, hardware, and test infrastructure; identify root causes and distinguish product defects from test environment issues.
  • Improve test repeatability, logging, and failure diagnostics, and reduce manual intervention and maintenance time.
  • Execute automated HIL tests during development and software releases.
  • Collaborate with Firmware, Electrical, and Systems Engineering to define test requirements.
  • Identify test coverage gaps and develop new validation scenarios.
  • Document test results, communicate failures, and support resolution of identified issues.
  • Improve automation practices, test maintainability, and verification workflows.
  • Help establish scalable verification processes and promote comprehensive testing, proactive defect detection, and continuous improvement.
