Embedded Software Engineer (IoT)

BioLite•Midvale, UT
•Onsite

About The Position

BioLite and Goal Zero are seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to develop firmware connecting power products to AWS IoT and Flutter and React Native mobile apps. The role focuses on wireless connectivity modules used in home backup and portable power products, including provisioning, OTA updates, device-to-cloud messaging, fleet telemetry, and communications among system modules. Current products use the ESP32; the engineer will help select and bring up a wireless platform for next-generation products, with options including embedded Rust, embedded Linux, and smart home standards such as Matter and Thread. A substantial part of the position involves improving existing firmware through refactoring, testing, and technical-debt reduction. The engineer will collaborate with firmware, electrical, cloud, and mobile engineers; debug hardware at the bench using oscilloscopes and logic analyzers; and develop code deployed in homes and in the field. The role also includes maintaining the firmware build and release pipeline, making OTA releases reliable and traceable, and documenting designs for developers, QA, manufacturing partners, and support. The position is based onsite in Midvale, Utah, with occasional remote flexibility, and reports to the Software Engineering Manager. It is full-time, with a stated base salary range of $120,000–$135,000 gross per year, depending on experience. Applicants must be authorized to work for a U.S. employer; visa sponsorship is not available.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or 5+ years of directly relevant experience.
  • 3+ years writing production firmware in C/C++ for microcontrollers or SoCs, such as ESP32, Nordic nRF, ST STM32, or other Arm Cortex-M platforms.
  • Experience with a real-time operating system such as FreeRTOS or Zephyr and a wireless vendor SDK such as ESP-IDF or nRF Connect SDK.
  • Working knowledge of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth LE, and an IoT messaging protocol such as MQTT.
  • Working knowledge of bootloaders, OTA updates, and device provisioning.
  • Working knowledge of serial communication protocols including UART, SPI, I2C, and CAN.
  • Experience testing embedded code using unit tests, simulation, or hardware-in-the-loop testing.
  • Proficiency in Python and/or JavaScript/TypeScript for build, test, and tooling scripts.
  • Experience with Git/GitHub, code review, and CI/CD.
  • Experience using AI coding assistants in daily work.
  • Authorization to work for an employer in the U.S.; the company cannot sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with AWS IoT Core or another cloud IoT platform, including REST APIs.
  • Experience with mobile app development, including native, Flutter, or React Native.
  • Experience with smart home protocols such as Matter, Thread, Zigbee, or Z-Wave.
  • Experience with or interest in embedded Rust, such as Embassy, or embedded Linux, such as Yocto or Buildroot.
  • Experience with fleet monitoring, device telemetry, or crash reporting.
  • Experience with consumer electronics, batteries, or power conversion.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain firmware for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE connectivity modules, including provisioning, configuration, OTA updates, and device-to-cloud messaging.
  • Refactor existing firmware, add unit and hardware-in-the-loop tests, and set coding standards to make changes safer and code reviews faster.
  • Develop protocol libraries connecting subsystems such as battery management, inverters, and IoT modules to each other and to the mobile app.
  • Maintain GitHub Actions CI/CD for firmware builds, tests, and releases, and make OTA releases reliable and traceable.
  • Collaborate with cloud and mobile engineers on AWS IoT device APIs, fleet telemetry, and app integration; debug issues from radio through app.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code and GitHub Copilot for prototyping, debugging, testing, and documentation.
  • Participate in code and design reviews.
  • Document designs for developers, QA, manufacturing partners, and support.
  • Help select and bring up the wireless platform for next-generation products.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage, with BioLite covering 90–100% of monthly premiums depending on plan selection.
  • 401(k) with employer match.
  • Paid holidays, vacation, sick time, and family leave.
  • Community bonus plan and stock option eligibility for full-time employees.
  • Adventure stipend after two years, providing PTO for an adventure aligned with BioLite’s mission.
  • Employee discounts on BioLite and Goal Zero products.
