MSA Safety is seeking a passionate, motivated, and driven Embedded Software Engineer. The engineer will apply technical capabilities and influence direction and decision-making while working with a variety of technology stacks and product types with highly engaged team members. The work involves firefighter equipment, gas detectors, and industrial worker gear with various sensor technologies, an IoT ecosystem of physical/digital products with wireless and wired connectivity, and safety-critical software (SIL, security). The role involves owning features, quality of delivery, and translating customer needs into technical implementations. It also offers opportunities for professional growth and the chance to work in Pittsburgh, PA, with connections to a global team in Berlin, Germany.

Requirements

  • Strong proficiency in real-time embedded system and software design/implementation in C/C++
  • Skilled in distilling deeply technical information down to its essence and packaging to gain buy-in for project or design direction (written and verbal)
  • Adaptable mindset that thrives within business, project or technology ambiguity or constraints
  • Agility and creativity in the face of complex challenges to quickly get to best result for the product, for the team, for the company
  • Track record of delivering solutions that work and influencing the entire development process
  • Take various stakeholder input and create or update the architecture or design to efficiently fulfill those needs
  • Own the architecture or design, teach/communicate it to development team, maintain it through selective changes
  • Identify and mitigate risks throughout development and testing of the embedded system/software
  • Guide a team through solution development
  • BSCE, BSEE or relevant technical discipline, preferably from an ABET or similarly accredited program

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in leading hardware bring-up efforts and diagnosing issues at the board, silicon, and driver layers
  • Experience with wireless communications (BLE, Cellular, etc.)
  • Skills with rapid prototyping, software design patterns, CMake, CI, various software development tools

  • Work with IoT style ecosystem of physical/digital products with wireless and wired connectivity (e.g. AWS, cellular, GNSS, BLE)
  • Work with safety critical software (SIL, security)
  • Own features, own quality of delivery, own the translation of the “why” behind internal/external customer needs into elegant, robust, timely technical implementations
