Embedded Firmware Engineer

Advanced Micro Devices, IncRochester, NY

About The Position

AMD is powering the next generation of supercomputing, high-performance computing, cloud, and AI. Whether you’re designing next-gen processors, enabling AI breakthroughs, or creating go-to-market plans, every role at AMD contributes to something bigger — technology that moves the world forward. The focus of this role is to develop and verify the embedded firmware in AMD's mixed-signal power management IP, and to contribute to the RTL design and verification of the hardware that firmware controls. You have a passion for low-level embedded software and the hardware it runs on. You are comfortable working at the boundary between firmware and RTL, and you enjoy debugging problems that span both. You are a team player with excellent communication skills, strong analytical and problem-solving ability, and the judgment to get firmware right the first time in a ROM-based design.

Requirements

  • Strong C/C++ programming for resource-constrained, bare-metal embedded targets
  • Experience developing firmware against hardware register interfaces, including bring-up on pre-silicon models and on silicon
  • Proficiency with embedded toolchains, debuggers, and scripting in Python
  • Demonstrated ability to debug across the firmware/hardware boundary
  • Firmware development for ROM-based or non-patchable targets, with the rigor that implies
  • SystemVerilog RTL design and/or verification experience in an ASIC design environment
  • Firmware/RTL co-simulation, emulation, or FPGA prototyping experience
  • Familiarity with control and telemetry interfaces such as I2C, SPI, APB, SVID, or PMBus
  • Post-silicon bring-up and debug experience
  • Bachelors or master's in electrical/computer engineering or computer science

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain bare-metal embedded firmware in C/C++ in a mixed-signal power management IC
  • Own firmware architecture for boot and reset sequencing, interrupt handling, communication, fault detection and response
  • Develop and maintain the firmware/hardware interface in partnership with RTL design, including register map and programming model definition
  • Optimize firmware for tight ROM footprint, RAM usage, and real-time response constraints
  • Define and execute firmware verification strategy, including unit testing, firmware/RTL co-simulation, and regression automation
  • Debug firmware running against RTL in simulation and emulation environments, driving failures to root cause across the hardware/software boundary
  • Own firmware code quality and release readiness ahead of ROM freeze, given the limited ability to patch after tape-out
  • Support post-silicon bring-up, debug, and firmware validation on silicon
  • Contribute to SystemVerilog RTL design and verification for blocks across the team as project needs require
  • Partner with the verification team to review test plans and ensure firmware-driven scenarios are covered at block and system level
  • Work across Analog, RTL Design, Systems Engineering, Architecture, and Product Engineering teams
  • Contribute to design and code reviews, and mentor engineers on embedded firmware practice
