About The Position

The Embalmer Quality Control Lead is a senior expert in the mortuary field with at least five (5) years of experience as a licensed Embalmer. This role operates on a 40-hour work week, 5 days a week, with a willingness to alternate schedules to meet departmental needs for essential mortuary operations. The position is responsible for advanced cosmetic application, leading and overseeing quality control, providing hands-on mentorship to all embalming staff, and completing the final check of all decedents prior to viewing/services to ensure the highest standards are consistently met.

Requirements

  • At least five (5) years’ experience as a licensed Embalmer required.
  • CA Embalmer’s License required.
  • Must possess a valid California Driver’s License and maintain a good driving record.
  • Demonstrate expert knowledge of industry regulations and preparation policies.
  • Professional, clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage complex tasks and interruptions efficiently.
  • Proficient in HMIS and other proprietary software, as well as MS Office (Outlook, Excel).
  • Must be self-motivated, adaptable to change, and committed to continuous learning.
  • Must be able to physically and emotionally handle working around human remains.
  • Must constantly comply with health and safety regulations.
  • Work indoors and outdoors during all seasons and weather conditions.
  • Frequent, continuous periods of time standing, up to 6 hours per day.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 20-30 bodies/caskets per day, weighing from 70lbs to 300lbs, into and out of refrigerated storage.

Responsibilities

  • Provide hands-on training to all Quality Control (QC) staff, demonstrate advanced techniques, share best practices, and offer continuous feedback.
  • Implement and maintain a rigorous quality control process for all cases, conducting post-procedure reviews to ensure every deceased is prepared to the highest standards prior to viewing/service.
  • Take the lead on complex or challenging cases, overseeing cases requiring reconstructive work or specific legal considerations, and providing guidance and coaching to associates.
  • Work with management to develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Job Aids, and prepare/present training modules to the mortuary/QC team.
  • Explore workshops, courses, articles, seminars etc. to enhance department performance and knowledge.
  • Execute all technical procedures, including embalming human remains, dressing, cosmetizing, and casketing human remains for viewing, burial, and other final disposition.
  • Execute death calls and perform removals from places of death, including personal homes.
  • Maintain a neat and clean work environment, assisting with moving and organizing supplies.
  • Professionally and courteously answer heavy phone traffic concerning removals and preparation needs.
  • Maintain positive, professional relationships with co-workers, third-party removal companies, and external partners (hospitals, Coroners Offices).
  • Ensure strict compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as company policies and procedures.
  • Self-manage workload and priorities; strictly adhere to attendance and dress code policies.
