About The Position

The ELL Teacher will establish a class environment that fosters learning and personal growth, helping students develop the skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed for continued education. This role requires adapting curriculum to student needs, maintaining a positive classroom climate, and collaborating with staff, parents, and the community. The position is subject to the Students First Act of 2011 and may be filled by transfer of a qualified internal applicant. No credit toward tenure is earned in the initial school year if hired after September 30.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a B.S. Degree in the area of instructional responsibility.
  • Alabama State Department of Education Teaching Certification in the area of instructional responsibility.
  • Knowledge of state core curriculum content standards and district educational goals and objectives.
  • Knowledge of student academic progress toward stated objectives of instruction.
  • Knowledge of the school’s program of studies related to mission, goals, and organization.
  • Skilled and effective in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to develop and implement lesson plans based on district and state courses of study.
  • Ability to adapt the curriculum to the needs of the student.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and community members.
  • Ability to use and manage technology including, but not limited to, e-mail, internet, Microsoft Office Programs, etc.
  • Knowledge and understanding of school system rules, administrative procedures, local board policy, and state and federal rules and regulations.
  • Possesses the physical and emotional ability to fulfill the contract period.
  • Employees will be required to submit legible fingerprints for a background review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
  • Background checks must not be more than 10 years old.
  • A new background check is required for anyone new to Madison City Schools, regardless of the recency of the ABI and FBI background checks.
  • Employees are expected to model professional conduct, maintain clear and appropriate boundaries with students, use district-approved channels for communications, and avoid interactions that could be perceived as favoritism, grooming, or undue familiarity.
  • Staff must promptly report suspected child abuse or neglect to law enforcement authorities as required by Alabama law.

Responsibilities

  • Assess student abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives, and student outcomes.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials.
  • Provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
  • Plan age-appropriate class activities and lesson presentations that meet the individual needs, interests, and ability levels of all students.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a classroom climate conducive to learning.
  • Identify student needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and resolving learning problems.
  • Maintain professional competence and continuous improvement through in-service education and other professional growth activities.
  • Communicate instructional expectations, student progress, or lack of progress to students and parents in writing or verbally.
  • Ensure confidentiality of all students’ records, grades, performance, and related matters.
  • Participate in school-level planning, faculty meetings/committees, and other school system groups.
  • Establish and maintain a professional level of rapport with colleagues, including team leaders, department heads, district-level coordinators, program directors, and instructional support staff.
  • Demonstrate positive and technically competent parent/community relations skills, including oral communication, written communications, and listening skills.
  • Fulfill professional responsibilities beyond the classroom, including participation in school co-curricular programs, school and district program improvement efforts, and community and parent groups.
  • Abide by and promote high ethical standards.
  • Model appropriate personal characteristics and work habits consistent with personal development goals established for students.
  • Perform other duties within the scope of employment and certification as assigned.
