About The Position

The Shasta County Economic Mobility Branch is seeking customer-focused and detail-oriented Eligibility Specialists to join their team on a full-time basis. This role involves helping individuals access essential public assistance programs and making a difference in the lives of Shasta County residents. The position offers career development opportunities working alongside experienced County workers. The current vacancies are in the Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency Economic Mobility Branch. The position begins with a paid, twelve-week training course covering basic knowledge of CalFresh and Health Care Programs, program rules and regulations, and computer systems. As an Eligibility Specialist, you will determine eligibility for public assistance programs through interviewing and fact gathering, maintain current knowledge of program regulations, and process casework through automated systems. You will also identify needs and make referrals for health, social, and/or employment services.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid California driver’s license
  • Two (2) years of experience performing clerical duties; OR One (1) year of experience determining eligibility for loans, financial assistance, unemployment, or veterans’ benefits, or publicly or privately funded health, counseling, or social services; OR Completion of sixty (60) semester or ninety (90) quarter college units (for Eligibility Specialist I)
  • One (1) year of full-time experience performing duties of an Eligibility Specialist I with Shasta County (for Eligibility Specialist II)
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite as well as basic knowledge of software and database programs
  • Excellent listening and strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent customer service skills and initiative
  • Solution-based problem-solving skills
  • Experience in maintaining cooperative relations and communications with customers, management, and staff
  • Ability to maintain a high standard of professionalism
  • Strong work ethic and ability to prioritize assigned work tasks and follow through in a timely manner

Responsibilities

  • Review applications, verify information, and determine eligibility in accordance with program rules and regulations
  • Explain program requirements and available services
  • Process and update case information in multiple computer systems
  • Determine the eligibility of applicants and recipients for public assistance programs through interactive interviewing and fact gathering
  • Maintain current knowledge of program regulations and procedures necessary for multi-program caseload administration
  • Initiate and process casework through automated systems
  • Identify needs and make appropriate referrals for health, social, and/or employment services
  • Perform related work as required
