About The Position

Join Our Team as an Eligibility Caseworker! Economic Services is one of the six core functional areas within the Social Services Division of the Wake County Department of Social Services. Our mission is simple but powerful: help Wake County residents access essential benefits accurately, compassionately, and on time. We support the community by administering key programs including Medicaid, Food & Nutrition Services, Work First, Child Care Subsidy, and Energy Services. We’re excited to announce an opening for a Family and Children Medicaid (FCMA) – Eligibility Caseworker I! As an FCMA Eligibility Caseworker I, you will determine initial and ongoing Medicaid eligibility for families and children. You’ll connect directly with clients—by phone, in person or go to patient's room —to gather the information needed to make accurate decisions and help families secure critical support.

  • Determining eligibility for a State or County Department of Social Services program (Medicaid, Food and Nutrition Services, Work First, Child Care Subsidy, Child Support, WIC or Energy Assistance Program)
  • Human Services Technician role supporting any Human Services program in a county or state Department of Human Services or Social Services agency
  • Determining eligibility for a Financial or Insurance Provider for financial assistance or insurance claims
  • Assessing the financial capabilities and need for financial assistance (Financial Counseling)
  • Direct clerical or customer services support to a Medicaid, Food and Nutrition Services, Work First, or Child Care Subsidy Program within a State or County Department of Social Services
  • Experience working with the homeless population
  • Spanish language skills preferred but not required

Responsibilities

  • Make referrals to community resources and supportive services
  • Enter and maintain all required information in the case management system
  • Request, review, and verify documentation according to policy
  • Evaluate information and determine eligibility
  • Meet performance standards for accuracy, timeliness, and caseload management
  • Provide backup support for team members as needed
  • Accurately document work and manage assigned reports
  • Use a document management system to stay organized and efficient
  • Work closely with the WakeMed Financial Counselors
  • Assess client situations and provide clear information about economic benefits
