About The Position

Join us as an Eligibility Caseworker I – Make a Real Difference in Wake County! Are you passionate about helping families stay healthy and supported? As an Eligibility Caseworker I, you’ll play a vital role in our Economic & Social Services Division, working within the Family and Children Medicaid (FCMA) Program. Your work directly connects Wake County residents with essential resources that protect their health and well‑being. We currently have openings at our Swinburne, Somerset, Departure Drive, and Public Health Center locations. Caseworkers may begin in either application or review functions within the FCMA program, with training provided in both areas over time. Depending on the location, you may interact with clients extensively or minimally—either in person or by phone.

Requirements

  • High school degree or GED
  • Two years of related experience
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted
  • Adaptability with high stress tolerance
  • Accountability and integrity with a strong attention to detail
  • Strong ability to communicate complex policy and determine client budgets; and the ability to develop proficiency in calculating client budgets
  • Customer service oriented, appreciative of client diversity, and possess the ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with customers and respond to their identified needs
  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced deadline-driven environment with extreme accuracy, to include flexibility and adaptability in an environment with frequent changes
  • Proficient with basic computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Word and Excel) and NCFAST, Hyland OnBase (PRIME), and OLV (Online Verification)

Nice To Haves

  • Experience determining eligibility for a State or County Department of Social Services program (Medicaid, Food and Nutrition Services, Work First, Child Care Subsidy, Child Support, WIC or Energy Assistance Program)
  • Experience in a Human Services Technician role supporting any Human Services program in a county or state Department of Human Services or Social Services agency.
  • Direct clerical or customer services experience providing support to a Department of Social Services program (Medicaid, Food and Nutrition Services, Work First, Child Care Subsidy, Child Support, WIC or Energy Assistance Program)
  • Spanish language skills preferred but not required

Responsibilities

  • Deliver compassionate case management by processing applications and/or reviews
  • Determine initial and ongoing eligibility for Family and Children Medicaid
  • Accurately enter and update client information in NCFAST to authorize benefits
  • Connect households to helpful community resources when needed
  • Stay up-to-date on policies and procedures through ongoing training
  • Support teammates by serving as back‑up when needed and maintaining timely documentation using our OnBase system
