About The Position

The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is seeking an Elementary Teacher for the Alabama School for the Deaf (ASD). AIDB is a comprehensive education, rehabilitation, and service program for individuals of all ages who are Deaf, Blind, Deaf Blind, and multidisabled, and their families. Founded in 1858, AIDB serves over 30,000 individuals annually across Alabama. The role involves shaping the lives of students at ASD by providing a positive, flexible, and professional classroom environment to help level the playing field in deaf education.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education (HI Certification), Deaf/Hard of Hearing Education OR Elementary Education from an accredited college/university.
  • Must hold a valid Alabama Teaching Certificate or valid certification in another state with ability to obtain reciprocity within six (6) months of hire date.
  • Must possess a sign language proficiency evaluation of INTERMEDIATE upon employment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama Special Education certification.
  • Must have or obtain a Hearing Impaired (HI) Certification within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills, including the ability to use ASL effectively for direct student instruction.
  • Must achieve a sign language proficiency rating of INTERMEDIATE PLUS within twelve (12) months and ADVANCED within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of and strictly adhere to the school’s Communication and Language Policies and Procedures.
  • Must complete and maintain Behavior Management training within the first twelve (12) months of employment.
  • Must complete and maintain CPR/First Aid training within the first twelve (12) months of employment.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of AIDB Policies and Procedures, the ASD Staff Manual, and the ASD Student Handbook.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Ability to adapt and teach other elementary subject areas or grade levels as needed based on student scheduling.
  • Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree in Special Education and/or Deaf Education or Elementary Education from an accredited college/university.
  • One (1) year or more of classroom experience.
  • A sign language proficiency evaluation of ADVANCED upon employment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive, multi-subject elementary instruction.
  • Develop, submit, and implement creative lesson plans, course overviews, and substitute teacher plans aligned with school curriculum and state standards.
  • Utilize differentiated instruction tailored to individual student needs, continually evaluating, reporting, and modifying instruction based on student progress.
  • Develop and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for each assigned student.
  • Lead IEP meetings with parents, guardians, and colleagues.
  • Establish clear standards for classroom behavior and provide age-appropriate discipline in accordance with the ASD Student Handbook to maintain a safe, positive learning environment.
  • Maintain meticulous student records, including grades, attendance, testing, and IEP documentation, and communicate this data to parents.
  • Cooperate and communicate professionally regarding student and department matters with parents, administrators, support personnel, AIDB staff, and the general public.
  • Maintain punctuality and regular attendance for classes, meetings, and conferences.
  • Participate in workshops, assist with in-service training programs, and support various student extracurricular activities.
  • Serve as an acceptable role model for students through professional grooming, dress, and conduct.
