About The Position

The Grade 4 Elementary Teacher provides engaging, standards-based instruction that fosters students' academic, social, emotional, and intellectual development. The teacher plans and delivers rigorous learning experiences aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs), helping students strengthen critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills while building independence and personal responsibility. The Grade 4 Teacher creates a safe, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment where students are encouraged to achieve academic excellence, develop positive character traits, and become responsible, lifelong learners. Working collaboratively with families, colleagues, and school staff, the teacher uses data-driven instruction, differentiated teaching strategies, and ongoing assessment to meet the diverse learning needs of all students and prepare them for success in upper elementary grades and beyond.

Requirements

  • Candidate must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement in elementary education.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of elementary curriculum, instructional best practices, child development, and the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL).
  • Possesses strong instructional, classroom management, communication, and collaboration skills to effectively engage diverse learners and foster academic and social-emotional growth.
  • Demonstrates the ability to analyze student data, differentiate instruction, integrate educational technology, build positive relationships with students and families, maintain accurate records, and work collaboratively with colleagues to create a safe, inclusive, and high-performing learning environment that supports the success of all students.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the district's curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in student learning styles.
  • Present subject matter according to guidelines established by Lynchburg City Schools, board policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect an understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  • Conduct an assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities.
  • Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  • Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.
  • Plan and supervise assignments of teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s).
  • Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.
  • Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned.
  • Sponsor outside activities approved by the principal.
  • Be a positive role model for students, and support the mission of the school district.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Manage student behavior under the Student Code of Conduct and the student handbook.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Assist in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
  • Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  • Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings, serve on staff committees, and participate in student/parental involvement activities as required.
