About The Position

The position is responsible for creating a dual-language immersion (Spanish) classroom environment that ensures the learning and personal growth of every student. This includes establishing effective rapport with students, motivating them to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed for responsible citizenship, and building good relationships with parents and staff. The role involves providing standards-based instruction in Spanish in two content areas, with another teacher covering English instruction in two other content areas. The classroom will comprise fifty percent native Spanish speakers and fifty percent native English speakers.

Requirements

  • Must possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in education or a related field.
  • Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Provisional, Collegiate or Postgraduate Professional License with appropriate endorsement to teach elementary school.
  • Must possess native or near-native proficiency in English and Spanish.
  • Must possess a high degree of cultural competency.
  • Must possess familiarity with second language acquisition pedagogy.
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Instructs students in a program of study that meets stated objectives and prepares them to master grade-level standards.
  • Instructs students using strategies conducive to dual-language immersion, such as sheltered instruction, cooperative learning, and discovery learning.
  • Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter as specified by law and school division regulations.
  • Develops lesson plans and supplementary materials aligned with the division's instructional philosophy and state standards.
  • Provides individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of diverse learners.
  • Translates lesson plans into engaging learning experiences to maximize instructional time.
  • Establishes and maintains student behavior standards to foster a functional learning atmosphere through positive reinforcement and behavior modification.
  • Evaluates students' academic and social growth, prepares report cards, and maintains appropriate records.
  • Communicates regularly with parents or guardians about student progress.
  • Supervises and monitors student movement within the building.
  • Administers standardized testing according to division practices.
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
