About The Position

The Elementary Teacher Assistant supports the implementation of a nature-based elementary program serving Kindergarten and 1st grade students. This role works closely with lead teachers across classrooms to support instruction, student engagement, and daily operations. The Teacher Assistant plays an active role in both indoor and outdoor learning environments and contributes to a collaborative, student-centered school culture. Requirements

  • Some college or coursework in education, life sciences, zoology or environmental education or early childhood education
  • Experience working with children
  • Demonstrate verbal, written and interpersonal skills; ability to be a creative and flexible team member
  • Experience and comfort in nature/working outdoors.
  • Successful candidates must complete a pre-employment drug screening, background check, and TB test.
  • Must be able to work in varying climate and weather conditions (rain, snow, hot, or cold).
  • Must be available Monday through Friday, with the ability to occasionally work weekends, holidays, and after-hour assignment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist lead teacher in delivering engaging, developmentally appropriate instruction
  • Support small group learning in literacy, math, and interdisciplinary activities
  • Reinforce concepts introduced during whole group instruction
  • Help prepare and organize instructional materials
  • Support student learning, engagement, and behavior in both classroom and outdoor settings
  • Encourage curiosity, independence, and participation
  • Assist with transitions throughout the school day
  • Monitor student safety and well-being at all times
  • Be aware of and responsive to best practice within the education profession
  • Create a safe, engaging, and inclusive classroom environment that fosters curiosity, independence, and confidence
  • Build strong, positive relationships with families and caregivers
  • Support family involvement in school events and learning experiences
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming classroom environment
  • Support setup and breakdown of learning spaces and materials
  • Assist in both indoor classrooms and outdoor learning environments
  • Work across multiple classrooms to support instructional needs as assigned
  • Collaborate with teachers and staff to ensure a smooth and consistent student experience
  • Participate in team meetings and school events as needed
  • Adhere to all policies set forth by the San Antonio Zoo
  • Be flexible and positive in handling last-minute changes in program agenda
  • Upholds all company policies as outlined in the Standard Operating Procedures, Team Member Handbook, and Code of Business Conduct.
  • Performs other work-related duties as required and assigned
