About The Position

NorthStar Public Schools is seeking a mission-driven educator to join their team as an Elementary Special Education Teacher for the SY26-27 school year. This role is part of the NorthStar Public Schools Instructional Team, directly leading instruction with students. Special Education Teachers will co-teach in an inclusion classroom setting with a general education teacher to support all students and will also lead small group instructional spaces. The position involves planning and executing high-quality daily lessons to achieve high student achievement and foster a school-wide culture of excellence. NorthStar Public Schools (formerly KIPP MN Public Schools) is a community-based public charter school serving approximately 250 K-8 students in North Minneapolis, with a majority of students identifying as BIPOC and qualifying for Free or Reduced Priced Lunch. The school is dedicated to narrowing academic achievement gaps and providing wrap-around services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in special education
  • Special Education Licensure required to work with students in Federal Settings 1-3. (K-8 or K-4 required)
  • Ability to design and implement specially designed instruction tailored to meet the unique needs of students requiring special education services.
  • Experience and willingness to work on general education teams and provide collaborative special education services with general education teachers.
  • Ability to collaborate with paraprofessionals and to effectively direct the work delegated to them.
  • Interest in and ability to relate well to elementary and middle school students.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with evaluation and eligibility determination for special education services is preferred.
  • Experience working in historically educationally underserved communities and communities of color
  • Multiple licensures
  • ASD, DCD, or ABS licensure

Responsibilities

  • Implement school-wide student management policies in classrooms and on campus.
  • Create and teach challenging and engaging lessons aligned to state standards.
  • Assist in the development of curriculum standards and mapping.
  • Ensure all IEPs and student needs are met within and outside the classroom.
  • Manage a student caseload.
  • Perform morning, lunch, and afternoon duties as assigned.
  • Attend all staff meetings.
  • Use data to drive instructional practices and improve student achievement with support from school leaders.
  • Continuously develop and improve teaching practices through feedback conversations with School Leaders and faculty.
  • Create an environment that promotes respect, rapport, and learning.
  • Establish effective relationships with students.
  • Create a classroom environment that is warm and demanding, expecting 100% of students to meet expectations.
  • Communicate clear and consistent expectations for learning, behavior, and achievement.
  • Monitor and manage student behavior effectively.
  • Communicate effectively with families, students, and colleagues.
  • Establish and maintain strong communication lines with all parents.
  • Communicate student progress in a timely and thorough manner.
  • Demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills.

  • Perform bus duties for the safety of students daily with assigned tasks and responsibilities.
  • Monitor hallways between classroom duties to establish safety and clear expectations of student behaviors.
  • Conduct home visits to students/families' homes twice per school year.
  • Maintain a neat, clean classroom environment and a professional personal appearance.
  • Perform duties as required/requested.
