About The Position

The Elementary School Counselor provides a comprehensive school counseling program that supports the academic, social-emotional, and career development of all students. The counselor collaborates with teachers, administrators, parents, and community stakeholders to promote student success and well-being in a safe and supportive learning environment.

Requirements

  • South Carolina Certification in Elementary School Counselor.
  • Knowledge of the school environment.
  • Be familiar with curriculum standards, instructional strategies, and the role of school counselor in supporting academic achievement.
  • Strong classroom management and a growth-oriented mindset.
  • Strong communication skills with students, staff, and administration.
  • Understanding a child’s behavior and dynamics.
  • Skilled in problem solving and patience.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and maintain attention to detail in a dynamic educational setting.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules.
  • Ability to speak effectively with elementary age students and/or employees in a school environment.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to establish and effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Driver’s License or ability to provide own transportation.
  • May be required to travel to school district buildings and professional meetings.
  • Prior to beginning employment, negative tb test results will be required.
  • Generally required to have the physical ability to perform tasks such as standing or walking for extended periods, bending, reaching, and lifting or carrying moderately heavy materials like boxes of books or equipment, often weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Good vision and hearing are important for reading small print, using computers, and communicating effectively with students and staff.
  • Manual dexterity is needed for handling books, shelving materials, and operating audiovisual and computer equipment.
  • The role involves interacting with children of various age groups and managing multiple tasks simultaneously in a dynamic educational environment.
  • Applicants must submit one supervisory reference and a copy of the appropriate credentials as part of the application process.
  • As a condition of employment and prior to onboarding, the district will conduct a criminal history background check. The recommended candidate will be required to provide personal information necessary to complete the background check such as date of birth, gender, and race to remain in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with managing large groups of children at the elementary school level, preferred.
  • Experience working on a variety of technologies needed to support the school’s technological functions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with district and state standards.
  • Deliver classroom guidance lessons that address social-emotional learning, character education, and academic skills.
  • Provide individual and small group counseling to support students’ academic progress, behavior, and personal development.
  • Assist students in developing skills such as decision-making, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and goal setting.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and staff to identify and support students with academic or behavioral concerns.
  • Consult with parents/guardians regarding student needs and provide resources or referrals when appropriate.
  • Coordinate and participate in MTSS, Individualized Education Program (IEP), and 504 meetings as needed.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student records in compliance with applicable laws and policies.
  • Respond to crisis situations and provide appropriate intervention and follow-up services.
  • Promote a positive school climate that supports diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Provide guidance on transition activities (e.g., moving between grade levels or schools).
  • Utilize data to assess program effectiveness and inform decision-making.
  • Stay current with best practices and participate in professional development opportunities.
