About The Position

The Elementary School Art Teacher is responsible for designing and facilitating a comprehensive visual arts program that nurtures creativity, artistic skill development, critical thinking, self-expression, and an appreciation for the visual arts. Working with students in Kindergarten through Grade 5, the Art Teacher creates engaging, developmentally-appropriate learning experiences across a variety of artistic media and techniques. The Art Teacher fosters a studio environment that encourages exploration, inquiry, experimentation, and reflection while supporting students in developing confidence as artists and creative problem-solvers. The teacher cultivates a positive classroom culture, values student voice and choice, and helps students make connections between art, culture, community, and the world around them. The Art Teacher collaborates closely with classroom teachers and colleagues to support inquiry learning experiences and contributes to a vibrant school culture through exhibitions, special projects, and community events. The teacher serves as a reflective practitioner who documents student learning, assesses growth, and continually refines instructional practices to support student success.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Art Education, Fine Arts, Elementary Education, or a related field required.
Minimum of three years teaching as a classroom teacher in an elementary school setting.
Demonstrated knowledge of child development, including physical, cognitive, social, and emotional growth, and the ability to apply developmentally appropriate instructional practices.
Strong understanding of visual arts techniques, media, processes, and contemporary art education practices.
Excellent communication, organizational, and collaboration skills, including experience partnering with families and addressing student needs.
Demonstrated proficiency with technology and digital learning tools in a Mac-based environment, including Apple/iOS platforms, productivity software (e.g., Excel), note-taking and organizational tools (e.g., Evernote), educational applications, and web-based learning systems.
Ability to create an engaging, inclusive, and student-centered learning environment that fosters creativity, artistic expression, and growth.
Ability to read, write, analyze, and interpret documents such as educational research, reports, and policies.
Ability to write educational reports, memos, and letters, and communicate effectively when speaking to students and adult audiences, via email and other tech-based forms of communication.
Knowledge of and ability to apply conventional English usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Responsibilities

Plan and deliver a sequential grades 1-5 visual arts curriculum aligned with school learning goals and grade-level developmental expectations.
Provide instruction in a variety of artistic media, techniques, processes, and forms of artistic expression, including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media, digital art, and fiber arts, as appropriate.
Design engaging, hands-on learning experiences that promote creativity, artistic risk-taking, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs, interests, and abilities of students.
Foster an inclusive classroom environment where all students feel valued, respected, and empowered as artists.
Encourage student reflection and self-assessment and welcome feedback as part of the creative process.
Integrate opportunities for cultural responsiveness, global perspectives, and appreciation of diverse artistic traditions.
Assess student growth in artistic skills, creative thinking, effort, and engagement using a variety of formative and summative assessment practices.
Document student learning through portfolios, displays, photographs, written reflections, and other appropriate methods.
Maintain accurate records of student progress and communicate growth and achievement to students, families, and school leadership.
Prepare written comments for each student and complete performance continua as required by the school.
Establish and maintain a safe, organized, and inspiring studio environment that supports creativity, independence, and collaboration.
Ensure the proper use, maintenance, inventory, and organization of art materials, tools, equipment, and supplies.
Model and teach appropriate safety procedures for all art materials and equipment.
Display student work in ways that celebrate learning, encourage reflection, and contribute to a visually engaging school environment.
Maintain high expectations for student behavior while fostering positive relationships and a culture of mutual respect.
Collaborate with classroom teachers to support interdisciplinary connections and integrated learning experiences.
Partner with colleagues to plan school-wide events, exhibitions, performances, and celebrations that highlight student creativity and learning.
Participate actively in faculty meetings, professional learning communities, curriculum development, and school initiatives.
Communicate regularly and effectively with families regarding student learning, artistic growth, and classroom activities on the Pueo art class page.
Support school events, open houses, exhibitions, and other community engagement opportunities.
Establish and maintain a cooperative and professional relationship with students, parents, colleagues, and administration.
Serve as a reflective practitioner who continually assesses and refines instructional practice.
Stay current with developments in art education, instructional strategies, and emerging artistic media.
Demonstrate professionalism, flexibility, collaboration, and a commitment to the mission, values, and educational philosophy of the school.
Fulfill all supervisory responsibilities and maintain the safety and well-being of students at all times.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or designated administrator.
Participate in school events and program activities outside of regular classroom hours, including parent-teacher conferences, open houses, parent education sessions, workshops, performances, and other critical programming needs.
Provide in-person classroom instruction, supervision, and support to students during the school day.
Maintain regular and predictable attendance at work.
Participate in the development of a safe and healthy workplace.
Comply with the instructions given for their own safety and health and that of others, in adhering to safe work procedures.
Take reasonable care to ensure their own safety and health and that of others.
Report any injury, hazard or illness immediately to their Supervisor and Human Resources.
Not place others at risk by any act or omission, not willfully or recklessly interfere with safety equipment.
Act as a role model by demonstrating safe work behaviors.
Identify, assess if necessary, and control hazards within the area of responsibility.
Ensure that equipment/supplies are properly maintained.
Maintain relevant knowledge of safety laws.
Mandatory reporting of sexual abuse to law enforcement or child protective services, and Human Resources.
Build positive working relationships with the classroom, school, and local community.
Create a safe, caring environment that is inclusive of and engaging for all learners.
Show an understanding of content knowledge and an appreciation for ongoing learning in the discipline.
Ensure that every student is provided quality and optimum learning experiences.
