About The Position

Tutor Doctor is seeking a patient, creative, encouraging, and flexible tutor to work with a fourth-grade student who needs consistent support in reading and math. Sessions will begin in the student’s home, although the family is also willing to meet at the Southfield Library. This social and lovable fourth grader has ADHD, cognitive learning challenges, an IEP, and is currently more than one year below grade level. He has received intensive reading therapy and receives resource assistance and additional support most days at school. He is musical, loves art, and responds best to sessions that feel active, encouraging, and achievable. Incorporating music, art, creativity, and hands-on activities will help make learning more meaningful and engaging for him. Areas of Support include Reading comprehension, Decoding and foundational reading skills, Math skills and problem-solving, and Academic confidence.

Requirements

• Patient, dependable, encouraging, and flexible
• Experienced in working with elementary-aged students
• Comfortable supporting students with ADHD, IEPs, cognitive challenges, or learning differences
• Knowledgeable in foundational reading, literacy intervention, and elementary math
• Creative and able to connect learning with a student’s interests
• Available for two consistent in-person sessions each week

Responsibilities

• Plan individualized reading and math activities based on the student’s needs.
• Break assignments and concepts into clear, manageable steps.
• Keep lessons engaging, varied, creative, and hands-on.
• Incorporate short, enjoyable breaks before frustration develops.
• Create frequent opportunities for success and celebrate progress.
• Respond calmly and encouragingly when the work feels difficult.
• Communicate regularly with the family and Tutor Doctor regarding progress.
• Submit timely session summaries.
• Support communication with the student’s school when appropriate.
