About The Position

Lighthouse Community Public Schools (LCPS) is seeking a passionate Elementary Literacy Specialist for the 2026-27 school year. This role is crucial for improving language acquisition and reading outcomes for elementary students, particularly those from traditionally underserved communities of color. The specialist will provide professional learning for teachers and Extended Learning Program (ELP) staff, focusing on literacy and English Language Development (ELD) instruction for young readers, struggling readers, and English Learners (ELs), including newcomers. The position involves teaching and managing systems that support Designated ELD, collaborating with various stakeholders to ensure instructional continuity and quality, and supporting the testing and reclassification of English Learners. The goal is to prepare diverse students for college, career, and lifelong changemaking, aligning with LCPS's mission and the EL Education Model.

Requirements

  • B.A. or B.S. required
  • Valid California teaching credential required (or appropriate out of state teacher licensure being transferred to CA)
  • Successful reading intervention and ELD teaching experience, required
  • 3+ years teaching in an urban school environment and K-8 setting, highly preferred
  • 2+ years of coaching and/or school leadership experience preferred
  • Experience with curriculum planning and data-analysis
  • Ability to see and hear on a continuous basis and speak frequently.
  • Sit and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Stop, extend, kneel and reach.
  • Lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Walk for long periods of time.
  • On rare occasions, would need to move quickly or run over smooth to uneven surfaces indoor/outdoor.
  • Repetitive movement of fingers and hands for keyboarding and whiteboard usage.
  • Teachers may need to supervise students outdoors in varying weather conditions and, on rare occasions, move quickly to intervene in student safety situations.
  • Occasional travel to sites for PD within and outside LCPS.

Responsibilities

  • Teach MTSS Intervention/ ELD: Teach, co-teach, and model multiple sections of Reading Intervention and/or ELD courses using research-based interventions and strategies aligned with the Science of Reading and Response to Intervention (RtI) model.
  • Design and implement data-based reading intervention instruction and progress monitoring tools.
  • Facilitate implementation of adopted literacy curricula, including providing training to teachers.
  • Coach, Develop Adults, Culture and Teams: Provide coaching, model lessons, and real-time coaching to teachers in Structured Phonics, Phonemic Awareness, Literacy aligned to the Science of Reading, and English Language Development.
  • Observe, coach, co-evaluate, and develop teachers and non-instructional staff using adult learning theory.
  • Collect, analyze, and leverage data to improve instruction and student outcomes.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers during common planning/prep and professional development time to differentiate instruction and support students with specific learning needs.
  • Professional Development Facilitation: Plan and implement professional development in Structured Phonics, Phonemic Awareness, and English Language Development.
  • Support literacy in content areas and reading intervention programs.
  • Lead English Language Development and Structured Phonics strategic vision on campus.
  • Support Network Professional Development days by leading or facilitating sessions across campuses.
  • New Teacher Support: Facilitate and support new teachers in understanding and implementing Common Core State Standards.
  • Serve as a yearlong induction coach, complying with state and local requirements.
  • Management & Monitoring of Phonics and ELD Programs & Student Outcomes: Use assessment data (Aimsweb/Dibels, NWEA/MAP) to monitor, evaluate, and adjust instructional strategies and curriculum implementation.
  • Analyze disaggregated data to support multilingual learners and achieve reclassification goals.
  • Exhibit professionalism and urgency driven by student and community needs.
  • Curriculum & Assessment Materials: Audit curriculum needs biannually in partnership with Shared Services and the Director of Elementary Academics.
  • Distribute and mail state testing materials.
  • Coordinate and Support Testing: Support K-5 reclassification by ensuring teacher input and family meetings.
  • Coordinate K-5 reclassification or student opt-out meetings for ELD program and upload applicable documents.
  • Collaborate with core classroom teachers to support English Language Learners.
  • Serve as a Member of the Leadership Team: Contribute to building a strong, collaborative, equity-focused adult learning community.
  • Support and lead professional development for staff in ELD and Science of Reading.
  • Serve on and support the facilitation of the elementary ILT and other leadership teams as the lead on literacy, ELD, and intervention.
  • Participate in RTI/MTSS/Leadership Team meetings to analyze student data and develop intervention strategies.
  • Support the COST process for individual students, identifying potential supports and drafting intervention plans.
  • Develop and maintain strong professional relationships with staff, students, and families.
  • Comply with all school and LCPS obligations, policies, and expectations, including reporting mandates.
  • Other duties as assigned.
