About The Position

Hemlock Public School District is seeking a passionate educator and student advocate to join K.C. Ling Elementary School as a Dean of Students / School Counselor. This role is foundational for student success, focusing on building strong relationships, providing proactive support, and fostering a positive school culture. The ideal candidate will help students grow academically, socially, and emotionally, while partnering with families and staff to achieve meaningful outcomes. The district emphasizes a student-centered approach, aiming to create an environment where every student feels valued, connected, and empowered.

Requirements

  • Valid Michigan School Counselor Certification or School Counselor License
  • Knowledge of social-emotional learning, restorative practices, behavior support systems, and student intervention strategies
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, staff, and community partners
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and student-centered practices

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree in School Counseling, Educational Leadership, Student Services, or a related field
  • Experience working with elementary-aged students

Responsibilities

  • Help create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive school environment where every student feels valued, connected, and empowered to succeed.
  • Provide individual and small-group counseling services that support students' academic achievement, social-emotional development, problem-solving skills, and overall well-being.
  • Partner with students, staff, and families to implement restorative practices, positive behavior supports, and proactive interventions that foster student growth and accountability.
  • Monitor attendance patterns, identify barriers to success, and collaborate with families and community partners to ensure students remain engaged and connected to school.
  • Develop meaningful connections with students, families, teachers, and staff while serving as a trusted advocate and resource for the school community.
  • Collaborate with teachers, intervention teams, and administrators to identify student needs, coordinate supports, and implement effective strategies for academic, behavioral, and social-emotional success.
  • Analyze behavioral, attendance, and student support data to identify trends, measure effectiveness of interventions, and develop strategies that promote positive outcomes for all students.
  • Take an active role in creating a school culture focused on respect, responsibility, kindness, and student leadership through schoolwide initiatives and programming.
