About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Safety and Security is seeking an Electronics Technician I to construct, install, and maintain access control, video surveillance, and key control systems supporting the safety, security, and operational needs of University of Iowa Health Care facilities. This position will work closely with the Electronics Technician II, Safety and Security staff, contractors, and other University personnel to ensure reliable operation and performance of electronic systems throughout the health care environment. The position requires strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and the ability to respond to equipment and system issues in a timely manner. The Electronics Technician I will also help maintain an accurate inventory of electronic components, equipment, tools, and supplies used by the department.

Requirements

Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques used in electronics and low-voltage systems.
Knowledge of electronic components, wiring, circuits, power supplies, and related equipment.
Knowledge of tools, meters, test equipment, and other equipment used in the electronics field and skill in their safe and appropriate use.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with electronics and low-voltage work.
Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair electronic and low-voltage equipment and systems.
Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, and technical documentation.
Ability to use logical and systematic approaches to identify and resolve equipment and system problems.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions and established procedures.
Ability to communicate effectively with staff, contractors, vendors, students, and the public.
Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team.
Ability to organize work, prioritize service requests, and manage multiple tasks.
Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
Ability to use Microsoft Office applications, including Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, for documentation, inventory tracking, recordkeeping, and other departmental functions.
Ability to safely operate and maintain tools, test equipment, and electronic equipment.
Ability to maintain an accurate inventory of parts, supplies, equipment, and tools.
Functional knowledge and proficiency in the use of a multimeter for electrical testing and troubleshooting.
Demonstrated knowledge of basic electronics principles and practices.
Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and diagnose electronic equipment or low-voltage systems.
Ability to read and interpret basic electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
Basic computer proficiency, including the ability to use Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Valid driver's license and the ability to meet University requirements for operating University vehicles, if applicable.
Ability to safely perform the physical and environmental requirements associated with electronics and low-voltage work, including working from ladders, accessing equipment in various locations, and handling tools and equipment.
Graduation from a two-year resident electronics trade school, or any combination of training and experience from which comparable knowledge and ability can be acquired.

Responsibilities

Builds, installs, modifies, maintains, and repairs electronic equipment and systems according to designs, specifications, manufacturer requirements, or supervisory direction.
Assists with preparing and interpreting schematic, wiring, and equipment diagrams.
Troubleshoots and diagnoses electrical, electronic, and low-voltage equipment and system problems using appropriate test equipment, tools, documentation, and diagnostic techniques.
Performs preventive maintenance, testing, calibration, adjustments, and repairs on electronic equipment and systems to ensure reliable and optimized performance.
Assists with installation, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of low-voltage applications, alarm systems, card access systems, emergency communication systems, security devices, and related equipment.
Responds to service calls and equipment issues and works to identify the source of problems and implement appropriate repairs or solutions.
Assists with troubleshooting and resolving issues involving electronic hardware, wiring, power supplies, communication devices, and related components.
Works with contractors and vendors as needed during installation, repair, testing, and maintenance activities.
Maintains accurate records and documentation related to equipment, repairs, maintenance, installations, and service activities.
Maintains department inventory of electronic components, supplies, tools, and equipment; monitors inventory levels and identifies items requiring replenishment or replacement.
Assists with ordering, receiving, organizing, and maintaining electronic parts and supplies.
Maintains tools, test equipment, and work areas in a safe, clean, and organized condition.
Assists with key assignment and control.
Attends conferences, training sessions, and workshops to maintain and expand technical knowledge and stay current with developments in the electronics and low-voltage fields.
Performs other duties as assigned.
