Electronics Technician I

QinetiQ US•Deming, NM

About The Position

QinetiQ US is seeking an experienced Electronics Technician I with operations experience to support the DHS Customs & Border Protection Tethered Aerostat Radar System (TARS) program. TARS uses aerostat systems to provide persistent surveillance and detection for a U.S. Government customer across eight operational sites along the U.S. Southern border, including locations in Puerto Rico, Florida, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. The technician will participate in comprehensive aerostat flight crew activities, including pre-launch, launch, ascent, transition, station keeping, and recovery. Secondary responsibilities include recurring maintenance of aerostat and radar systems and site operations support, such as security, landscaping, and logistics. The work takes place in exterior and interior environments, sometimes in inclement weather, and may involve various shifts to meet mission requirements.

Requirements

  • GED or high school diploma.
  • Two years of experience in electrical/electronics maintenance; an associate or Bachelor of Science degree in any technical discipline may substitute for the experience requirement.
  • Ability to obtain flight operator certification.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license.
  • Ability to understand, speak, read, and write English fluently.
  • Willingness to work in a 24/7 shift scenario and be assigned various shifts as mission requirements dictate.
  • Proof of U.S. residency.
  • Ability to carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work from suspended and/or elevated work platforms.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior aerostat operator experience with an aerostat of any size.
  • Ability to pass the aerostat basic training course, required for continued employment.
  • Previous experience maintaining radar systems.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in aerostat flight crew activities, including pre- and post-flight tasks, launch and recovery, helium topping, snubbing, inflation and deflation, tether inspections, and emergency procedures for moored and airborne operations.
  • Perform corrective and preventive maintenance, potentially under supervision, on aerostat pressure-control, power, mechanical and hydraulic subsystems, hardware and rigging, tether systems, and the aerostat envelope.
  • Conduct circuit analyses, calculate waveforms, trace signal-flow relationships, and use complex test instruments such as dual-trace oscilloscopes, Q-meters, deviation meters, spectrum analyzers, and pulse generators.
  • Operate and maintain, potentially under supervision, enclosed mooring systems and winch vehicles, site power generators, stand motor vehicles, special man-lift vehicles, and forklifts.
  • Assist with aerostat system pre-flight and post-flight checks and inspections.
  • Operate and maintain compressed-gas equipment, including transferring helium for aerostat inflation and replenishment.
  • Perform corrosion control and site facilities maintenance.
  • Operate general-purpose and special-purpose vehicles, including man lifts at heights up to 150 feet.
  • Maintain an understanding of digital design as it relates to radar signal generators, MTI, IF receivers, clutter rejection, mixers, multipliers, low-noise amplifiers, and digital displays.
  • Maintain site documentation, including parts request forms, equipment condition tags, timecards, and flight data and maintenance logs.
  • Coordinate resupply and repair logistics for aerostat subsystems.
  • Train and certify personnel in selected aerostat subsystem procedures.
  • Support security, logistics, and site-specific requirements when they do not conflict with primary electronic maintenance responsibilities.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
